The HDFC is now charging Rs 200, for drawing money out of the ATM on all international cards. Dont know about the other banks.

How are they making this charge? does it show up on your bank account? I used the HDFC ATM in Mapusa in March but have not been charged but I did use my Nationwide card and they now charge so it could have been included in that.

It states on the screen of the ATM that you will be charged 200Rs. I think it was only introduced in late March or possibly from 1st April.Doesn`t show on statements.

Another additional problem in banana repulbic.
I have relied heavily in the past on withdrawing cash from ATMs.
I have been avoiding HDFC now because of their ridiculous 200 rupees fee on international cards. Have tried at other banks but it shows up on my statement anyway.
Before it was a 1% commission on the amount withdrawn. The problem now is compounded because I haven't been able to withdraw mor than 10000 at once from ATMs, the commission fee is repeated of course each time per operation.
So instead of paying the commission of 200 and the heck with it on a 25000 withdrawal,
I am now forced to pay the comission on 10000 and have to repeat the operation again + commission if I want more money. 10000+10000+5000 adds up to three transactions totaling 600 rupees fee
Exchange rate is poor too of course.
My question to you all, what is the latest ATM you have used recently giving you 25000 or 20000 in one single withdrawal. It seems lately that they are all limiting the maximum withdrawal to 10000 on foreign cards. Is this the latest scam they are playing ?
Axis bank used to give 20000.
It displays the amount of 20000 as maximum permissible on the screen but isn't accepting it (this is occuring at different AXIS branches as well) and forces you to go down, so you are left like an idiot trying 19000, 18000, ..... ....... ........ ....... ....... until you realize that 10000 is going through.
I am 100% sure that an AXIS card can withdraw 20000 as indicated permissible on their screen.

I had this problem last year. Axis was the only bank at which I could get 20,000 at a time, the rest were only 10,000 at a time. It looks like I will be going back to travellers cheques to avoid this latest rip-off.

Just a little message to say welcome back to BE.
I think I shall take travellers cheques next time as well - seems to work out cheaper than ATM's, especially if you shop around for the best exchange rate.
Look forward to hearing more from you

Axis and IDBI are definitely not charging for international withdrawals unless you make more than 5 withdrawals in a month and then its only 20rs a time. The main reason you can only draw 10,000 rs at a time is because of the no. of notes the machines can dispense. When one could draw 20.000 one always got 1000rs notes which seem to have totally disappeared.
