Default Healthcare Germany

If a UK citizen moves to Germany, but does not have work, are they covered for healthcare?

If not, how does one get cover and how much does it cost?

Thank you

Martin

Hi Martin,

without a work you´ll only be covered in emergency cases such as car accident, open wounds etc. There are 2 kinds of medical insurance in Germany: "state" insurance and pprivateinsurance. Most people have the first one. You´ll automatically be able to get it if you work, doesn´t matter where and how much you earn. People with higher income CAN and foreigners without a job ONLY CAN have priprivatesurance, which mostly assures better attitude towards you on the part of doctors and shorter waiting times. There are a lot of insurance companies you can ask for more information, like www.debeka.de, www.barmer.de, www.aok.de etc. Their monthly price and covered activities can be very different, it depends on how old you are, how your state of health is etc.! If you speak German, you can comcompareem all on www.aspect-online.de and find the best one for you.

Hi Tuerki

Thank you very much for this very useful reply.

I will look at all these links.

What happens if you are a UK Citizen and you are 65 years or older?

The reason I ask is that in Spain you have to be part of the healthcare system by payment until 65 years of age, after that you are covered anyway automatically.

If you are insured anywhere in EU, you get coverage in any country when you travel. Probably it's different when you live there permanently? Try to check with your current insurance.

As stated before if you have public health insurance from any EU member (NHS or AOK germany) your are intitled to the same health care in any EU country. Just ask the Spanish who complain about health tourists from the UK who come for a short jaunt and opps fall and break thier hips intitling them to a free hip replacement operation. If your over 65 the form you need is I believe is A220. But you have to ask on that one. But getting health coverage is not a problem simply a matter of the right forms.

If you move to Germany don't bother with private health care unless you are young or extremly highly paid. The public system is excellent.

If you do move to Germany than check out www.britboard.de or www.toytownmunich.com
