Default Where in France?

After having had some useful information on my Paris question, I am trying to find out what are nice regions for a holiday home between 2 and 3 hours drive from Paris? Husband will be working very hard for several years in Paris and the idea of having a rustic barn to renovate and somewhere for our 3 kids to have more space seems very appealling.
I heard that the Loire region is nice... Does anybody have an insight into the areas? Thanks!!

The area around Saumur is lovely - you should look at Le Chant's photo's to get some idea. Normandy is also very popular with Parisians for holiday homes.

Thanks Val. Le Chant's pictures do look fabulous. Once we're over there in October, I'll have to go and check it out. As south as possible would be best (within 3 hours drive mind you), my father in law lives around Nice.

The Loire valley is very nice, and about the right distance away - full of chateau's and quite popular with the English.
