Default a warning for dog owners

Hi all

our pup has been very sick this week; at first we thought he had eaten something off; then on Thursday his breathing became very laboured and he became sicker and sicker.... at this point I remembered the vet saying something about ticks carrying a sickness here... he'd had a tick!

Next day we were banging on the door at opening and sure enough after investigations he had the tick borne virus...

The vet said it doesnt usually occur this late in the year, but he was the third this week... so if your dog has a tick beware!!! if he starts throwing up, gets sleepy and has a temperature get him to a vet... this can be fatal.

48hours on he is just beginning to pick up and I will not be complacent about ticks again!

Take care out there!

Very well done to figure out the problem in time and I hope the pooch makes a full and speedy recovery. The clock is ticking.

I know a couple of dog-owners whose pets have had tick-fever, and the dogs go downhill very rapidly. Luckily with quick diagnosis they can make a full recovery but you have to act quite quickly.

Despite the poor weather and two night frosts here, we found a tick on one of our two JRs, not swollen, so not long been there, on the head.
We do do manually check our two in the spring and summer months, but don't expect issues this time of year, so this is a helpful post. I guess the bigger the dog and heavier the coat make it more difficult to check for these.
Glad to hear you caught it in time.

Hi again all; thanks for all your kind words!

Our pup is fine today but the vet told us that this illness (piropasmosis) is at a real peak at the moment; she has never seen so many cases in a week!

Also to have had it is not to have immunity... you can get it again and again.

Thanks Dennerlkymum - I guess it is another four Scalibor collars then!
My BH was only saying yesterday that when she come back she wants to come back as a dog in our household. And all because I put extra gravy in their stew!

Sorry to hear about your dog's health problems. Just a reminder that ticks may also be carriers of Lyme Disease which is a ghastly illness for humans to catch, and, as with your dog, isn't that easy to diagnose. Treatment takes for ever.

With my sister in Ohio many years ago and her dog got skunked. I assumed itb was like fox but a bit worse.
So I was not prepared for the awful reek.
We went down to the local store and bought 5 gallons of tomato juice.
We washed the dog several times in this and, bizarrely, it actually worked!

Hey Biggsie - best laugh I've had in days. Is the dog now walking Italian?
