Oh, not to be in England
Now that Riots're there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some burning, unaware,
That the lowest boroughs and the sportswear shop,
Round the electrical goods store are alight,
While the chaffinch sings on the burned out bus,
In England - now!
Now that Riots're there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some burning, unaware,
That the lowest boroughs and the sportswear shop,
Round the electrical goods store are alight,
While the chaffinch sings on the burned out bus,
In England - now!

Excellent!
However, lest anyone over in the UK should get carried away and decide to emigrate to, say, France, they might want to know that similar outbreaks of wanton criminal damage and looting occur here too, perhaps more frequently than in the UK, although often limited to the sink estates that surround our big towns and cities. One recently took place in the luxury shopping streets in the very heart of central Lyon just a few months ago. The difference is perhaps that the French police are better equipped at dealing with such events; for one thing they have far more practice, and are armed.... and have none of the qualms the British police do.

Treskillard,
Now look what you've started! You've got me at it too......
I stood on the bridge at midnight,
Big ben was striking the hour,
The rioting crowds were screaming
Whilst the bus the fire did devour.
I saw the flames bright reflection
In the waters under me,
The fear that England was sinking
And for all the world to see.
Bring back all of those good times
When the bobby was a friend on the beat
Dixon of Dock Green was a hero
And DelBoy on the box quite a treat.
(With sincere apologies to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Dammit, I didn't realise it was contagious
England’s Lost Glory
I’m surprised they are surprised
that riots and looting took place
in a country of such class distinction
and policies of such a disgrace
our pensions have all been rifled
and bankers pocketed the loot
is there anything more despicable
than a looter in a pin-stripe suit?
The power of the rich and the greedy
Knows no bounds in these sad times
They let Tesco ’fiddle its taxes’
. . . And I’ll be bugg’rd if this line rhymes
Oh yes, bring back the good old bobby
And Dixon, he was a star
let’s have no more oppressive policing
And corruption that’s gone way too far
We see a pay gap constantly rising
And employment still in decline
Dave says “we’re all in this together”
Fair shares? Well, who’s getting mine?
So take heart me ole’ Brit expats
You thought things couldn’t get worse
Did this bring you back to earth?
Oh . . . enough of my cynical verse
G'day y'all
