Hi Can anyone advise on taking dog to France....I thought that one you got the pet passport you could go to and back without problem....but not so easy is it???? please help....have'nt had much success with other queries

Have you looked at the DEFRA SITE

There have been lots of threads on the Spain forum on it, Like this one
You have to watch out for the blood test timing etc when changing between countries. :rolleyes:

hi , for 2 years we took our dogs back and forth between england and france, they were micro chipped and had up to date passports, into france no problem but every time we came back to the uk, they had to have a jab each for worms , fleas and ticks which cost about 50 euros per dog. This was beacuse they are big dogs, also they had to leave no sooner than 12 hours but before 24 hours after this jab, make sure the vet fills in the paperwork properly with the date time etc otherwise it can be a pain at calais, good luck and any questions PM me

Hello Kitty,
Taking a dog to France and back is easy. Make sure you begin applying for a "pet passport" a few months before you plan to travel as the process is long. Your pet can enter France with no problem but 12/24 hours before returning to the U.K. it must be treated for ticks and mites as the certificate for this will be checked and your dog's micro-chip will be scanned upon re-entry. Takes 2 minutes. You could book an appointment with a French vet before you leave the U.K. if you don't want to risk not finding one whilst you are in France, although there are plenty.
Three years ago we emigrated to Gozo, the little sister island to Malta. We drove through the Channel tunnel into France, then into Belgium to catch the motorail which took us back into France. We drove into Italy where we had to have our dog treated for ticks in Genoa (Malta has the same anti-rabies regulations as the U.K.). We took the ferry to Malta and after two nights in Valetta took another ferry to Gozo. During all the journey we were not once asked to show our dog's documents, even upon arrival in Malta!
Sadly, we had to return as my husband couldn't cope with the humidity. Again we drove back through Italy and France, had the dog treated for ticks, and were only checked by the British customs on arrival at the Channel tunnel.
We're hoping to move permanently to France in November so it's been worth keeping Tula's passport up-to-date.

nothing to be worried about - just make sure it's all done in the right order I had the devil of a job to get the passport as I moved within the uk in the middle of the procedure
1 Get dog chipped
2 get dog rabies vaccinated - has to be specific injection
3 have blood test approx 1 month after vaccination
4 if result ok wait 6 months - passport issued
5 on return to uk dogs must be taken to vet not less than 24 hours or more than 48 hours before sailing departure time. time of arrival in uk is not relevant. good luck (my dog is assisting with the typing so any spelling errors are her contribution)

Wendo, you're quite correct, of course - the dog must be treated for ticks 24/28 hours before returning to the U.K. not 12/24 as I put before. Sorry for the error, folks!

Thanks everyone for the useful info - I live in Germany (though I am British) and my dog has her passport, her rabies certificate, and uptodate injections. What I want to know is which ferry companies take dogs and do you need to have a transport box or can they just go in a car? Or perhaps even on the train?

You will find that most ferries take pets, but they must remain in the car during the crossing.

Thanks Roz. I hope to be able to take Nico to England some time. I couldn't stand to put her on a plane...I think she'd be so scared...she's a little nervous. One friend of mine whose dog is very placid could hear her dog screaming and crying and barking all the way...how awful!

Hi,

We brought our dog to France and came on the train to save leaving her in the car alone.

Also we got some sleeping tablets from the vet and she slept for the whole 8 hour journey.

I moved to France about 18 months ago and didn't have a problem bringing my dog here. My advice is to see your local vet and discuss it with them. They will know exactly which hoops you will need to jump through. One word of warning!! I live in (very) rural France and the locals think I'm strange that I even let my dog in the house!! Our local vet is more likely to have his arm up a vache (cows) bum than check out my dog's worming. Also you will need to treat your dog monthly with "Frontline" as there is a nasty bug here that could kill your dog in days if not protected.

What is exactly your problem with taking your dog to France or is it bringing him back to the UK - having lived in France for 20 yrs and brought my dog backwards and forwards with regular monotony, perhaps you would like to give me a ring on either 01268 794202 or 07979345581
