Hi, sorry I can't help, but if no one comes up with any recommendations, you'll find all the "Experts Géomètres" in your area in les Pages Jaunes.
I quite understand your desire for "impartial" advice, but you could get several estimates from the local artisans and compare what they say.
Good luck!

As Diane has said you could call into the Experts Géomètres but you will/would probably be better off getting as many builders in as possible to quote for the work. Most of these old houses have a bit of rot and some of the timber needs swapping out at some point.

Yep! our house of the same age has at least 2 beams (non supporting) that need replacing shortly!

Hi Sally, we have juist bought an old longere in the Mayenne, about 10 km East of Lassay Les Chateaux. We used Nick Warner. His Website is

http://www.french-property-survey.com/

He is based in Brittany but covers Mayenne. His service was excellent and he provided the best survey report we have seen, full of photos with comments etc. If you do decide to use him, please let him know we recommended him. Good luck...

Do you know if they have any indemnity insurance?, As ultimately that is the main reason a surveyors report is needed in the UK to satisfy a lender.

To be honest I don't, but I guess a phone call would find out. British Surveyors in teh UK might have 'insurance' but they are very careful with their wording. They will never tell you that a wall won't fall down. The surveyor we used seemed very upfront. He told us that the Gable wall of the barn could fall at any moment, but might last up to ten years. That was enough for us to do something about it.

With a 'guestimate' like that he'd make a good weather-man in UK.......
