Default Shotgun removals

Hello people! This is my first post on this site.

We will be moving from the UK to France within the next 18 months or so. We are intending to move to the Besancon area.

My husband owns a shotgun. Can anyone tell us what he will need to do both on leaving the UK and once we reach France to make sure that he is all above board and legal with the authorities at each end?

Many thanks.

Assuming you are coming by ferry just let the ferry company know in advance that you will be bringing a firearm.

They will take the gun and ammo off you at the port.

When you arrive in france it is given back in the ferry terminal after you have gone through pasport control & customs.

There is no requirement for a licence or to declare a shotgun in france. Keep your UK shotgun licence until all your guns are in france, then surrender it back to the UK police area who issued it.

Thanks for the information.

We normally travel by Eurotunnel, but I guess the same principle applies.

CUSTOMS no longer remove shotguns from you but a sticker is placed in the window of the car and customs will check it. You are not allowed to carry ammo between the uk and france an export licence is reqired in the uk and the police have to be informed so that they are aware that the gun is not going to be in the uk and may wish to inspect it prior to removal. shotguns here do not need to be in a lock box but the ammo must not be with the gun should you take an intrest in hand guns or a rifle a gun course with the gendarmes and a hunting course is needed and a lock box is reqired.
