Can't help here, except to suggest that, if it's to check the lie of the land on the spot, only you and your OH come over for 6 months. There's no real point in the whole family upping sticks with you, if you find out after 6 months that it's not going to work out.... You would have a correspondingly low rent, as well, and if you feel confident to stay permanently, then you look for a larger place for your family....

What area are you looking in? We have a large house in the Indre (Dept 36) Near Chateauroux which is available for 6 month fully furnished lets. A good site to look on is French-Property.com (which is where we advertise) Also Angloinfo (which has sections for all parts of France i.e. Angloinfo Limousin or Angloinfo Dordogne
