Default Mobile holy grail?

I keep looking at mobile phone websites and getting dazed and confused by the wonderful offers being made to me..... Know the feeling?

What I'm looking for can be quite simply stated and I think (???????) it's out there somewhere. Have any of you chaps found it, please?

I want to set up two new French mobile contracts: for me a smartphone with a decent data allowance, reasonable minutes and texts, and for my wife a regular phone again with a decent call/text package (we're neither of us big phone users).

BUT (here's the tricky bit where I'm looking for magic), within my monthly minutes, I want to be able to dial UK numbers (landline and preferably also mobile) at no further cost, certainly so far as the landline numbers are concerned.

I keep hearing people say that they've seen that sort of deal, but can anybody point me directly to one such PLEASE?

Thanks and cheers in advance,

g

Free Mobile have the best deal for inclusive overseas calls in their standard €19.99pm package and they even include free roaming for some countries - (currently not the UK but they keep adding more).

Free Mobile have unlimited calls to Uk fixed lines and 3GB data after which it is slowed down. They also have public wifi in many towns.

Unfortunately I have to change as there is no reception at my next house and that is a factor which needs to be taken into account alongside price

Thank you for this, gentlemen. Unfortunately the question of reception looms large in my consideration, too. I am trying to ascertain whether they cover us, but it's not looking good - dammit.....

we used lefrenchmobile for a while.

It's pay as you go, you still have to pay for calls to the UK but it's very cheap rates

I have delayed (again) getting a smartphone - if only they made a "not very smart " phone.
Now that I see the business plan for WhatzApp I feel quite smug.
If I had any money in them I would be selling all phone company share as fast as I could.
We will face a very different landscape in a few months, so I will wait again to see what the tariffs are then

Free signed an agreement last night with Bouygues to buy their entire network of cell masts so, assuming the deal goes through, I assume Free will no longer rent Orange's cell network. This might affect future reception for better or worse depending where you are.

I am very ignorant on these matters, so please excuse me.
If I get a 4G enabled phone, and there is no service in my area (which there is not) will it still work on 3g or possible even 2G?
