laudrette/laundromat?
What is a laundrette called in French? Not a laverie where they take your stuff, wash it for you, and charge you an arm and a leg. Am looking for one of those places with coin operated machines like Mr. Bubbles I so loved in Manchester - a room full of giant machines!
I need to wash some duvets and big things which won't fit in my home machine and do not want to give it to the local laverie (could possibly work out cheaper to chuck the duvet than give it to them if what I am looking for doesn't exist!)
TIA !

Actually this is called a "laverie", to be more precise you can say "laverie automatique" (which specify it's self service). And the shop where they take your stuff, clean it and iron it is usually called a "pressing", but sometimes we also call it a "laverie". Complicated, huh ?
I hope it helps!

I think it is just called laverie?
Almost spent the night in one last month! We lost power in part of the house, whilst the washing nachine was halfway through a cycle. It was getting late but we went to the local laundrette complete with baby, 20 mins before closing. It reached 9pm and I wondered if someone would come to close up (no-one else was there). By 9:10pm I thought we were safe until all the lights went out plunging us into complete darkness, then the door began to close itself (didn't realise it was an automated system)!! My wife ran, and caught it just in time, so I had to stand there propping it up (with baby in my hands), whilst we finished the wash in almost pitch blackness (thankfully they kept on the power to the washing machines)! :-O
