Now I know Tres was worried we'd all gone quiet on him, so here's something to talk about. Wondered if any of you can trace your family tree back to France? Novo - your wife doesn't count, within living memory
Apparently - now I know you are all going to be impressed with this - mine were on the boat with William the Conq
I kid you not, in Doomsday book too
Always wondered why I loved Barfleur so much, then saw the plaque there marking the spot they left from. That must be why I feel so at home here - I've come back to my roots. The fact it's taken almost a thousand years says a lot but made it in the end.

Thank you Val
Well funny you should ask that!
No.
But.
My partner (I would say my wife - it's a long story) - now her mother was born of a 2nd World War love affair between a French serviceman in the Free French forces and a married English woman. Not spoken about for many years (it came out fairly late after an unexplained and ugly divorce) the family without knowing about it developed a love affair with France and now half of them live here.
!

They love uniforms too

Did some digging on my family tree and traced back to Cornwall in the 1700's, the names of Sambell and Penpraise. We were told these might be from the Hugonots, but I didn't research it any further

Perhaps your ancestor knew Jean-Cristophe d'Isigny (the ancestor of Walt) who was also on the same boat as Bill the Conk?

I am sure that I was a mountain peasant in a former life - does this count? I have not a scrap of evidence other than the sheer joy of, rather by chance, having returned to my roots. Strangely drawn I was, strangely drawn ..........

[QUOTE=Novocastrian;5477105]My wife will be thrilled to know that she doesn't count.

I meant because she's too young and has ancestors in living memory:

Perhaps my genetically inbuilt horror of all things Ikea is going to finally put an end to my fantasy Scandinavian ancestry. Oh, such trauma for a Sunday morning, but can't argue with the DNA, or so Monsieur le Président would have us believe ........ but that's another story.

Just have a nice cup of tea and you'll feel better (said the Viking to the Paysanne)

Whilst you guys go gallivanting, I'm going to tend the turnip, which, carefully carved, will provide perfectly adequate nutrition for me and my son throughout the long hard months of winter.
