Get good breakdown insurance as well , plus tell your insurance company and if you have fully comp insurance then see about uprating the green card as otherwise it only covers you for the minimum required by law in whatever country. Have Fun!

No not at all, and I've never had it myself. Depends on how much confidence you have that your car will or won't leave you on the side of the road in the middle of the night on the eve of a public holiday and with a ferry to catch...and no one to call within 1000 miles of your location..

Unless of course you are involved in an accident.
Normally, my UK insurers offer me EU breakdown cover when I insure my UK car for driving in France.
I don't need it because my car is covered anyway.
Third Party is covered anyway but comprehensive is not.

My french car is covered for breakdown included with my french insurance - had to use it last month for a dead battery.

I have insurance tpft cover in the uk, but to be honest it only covers me for 90 days I'd like a Spanish insurance to make sure everything is perfect if I'm honest and I'm thinking of changing over the plates etc etc does that cost a lot ? As I plan on staying over 6 months

I assume you know that you will need to apply for an NIE if you want to stay in Spain for that length of time? If you're intending to do that then fine, but if you weren't intending to do that then you won't be able to change your plates over or get car insurance or do anything that requires a residence certificate (which is quite a lot of things).

Spanish bureaucracy for expats make French bureaucracy look simple ;) and I believe most people in Spain pay a gestor to handle it all for them.

Ah well, that's the Swiss for you, especially if running on French plates... Swiss radars vary from canton to canton.

At least on the French peage, one <mostly> gets adequate warning signs that a radar is just coming up...

There are of course the mobile patrols who are not advertised up front and hide fairly well. Watch the oncoming traffic if you're cruising above the limit, often a few flashed headlights can head off a fine if one reacts in time.
