Welcome to the Forum your going to need a drain cleaner. Pump with a long hose that goes down it and clears the blockage. If this does not work then it will have to be dug out. Our drainage syndicate deals with that sort of thing.

If pumping does not work, you may need it emptied. Have a look under Vidange.

Although sellers should empty the tank if it is full before leaving, many do not. Mine was cemented and glued shut so that nobody could check. No surprise therefore that it was full. It cost me about 300 Euros to have it emptied.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!
Are you the tenant? In that case, contact the landlord ASAP.
If you're the owner, then there's ambiguity:
If you mean "new" in the sense of a newly built house, contact the firm who installed the septic tank ASAP!! It will be covered by the guarantee.
But if you mean "new" in the sense of "just bought", then follow the above advice and DIY or call in a septic tank specialist ASAP...

Hi Loghutemina,

I'm guessing English is not your mother tongue but you are going to have to be clearer in the description of your problem. We Brits refer to drains as being everything after the water goes down the plug hole. For the French it is the bit which makes the water soak into the ground.

Are you on a septic tank and where exactly is the blockage?

If your needs are urgent you need to call your local "entreprise d'assainissement".

The "Pages jaunes" are your friend.
Enter "assainissement" and "Roubaix" and click the "à proximité" box, and you'll get about 100 results.

A bad smell is not the same thing as a blockage and so the solution may well be different too. The specialist companies may be expensive but they can do much more than just empty the septic tank and will be able to diagnose the problem and suggest a solution.

If you have just bought your house then the previous owner may well be responsible for sorting this out.

A more complete description of what is happening is necessary if you want help from the forum.

I'm afraid you're going to have to pay for dealing with whatever problem is causing the "bad smell".
As mentioned above, the vendor should have emptied the septic tank, but the French maxim of "caveat emptor" (= let the buyer beware) also springs to mind and I suspect that they won't be obliged to pay....

I think a "vice caché" trumps a "caveat emptor" !

But it all depends when the OP bought the house. A controle by the SPANC of septic tanks has been obligatory for some while now as part of the vendor's obligations.

A "vice caché" is possible, it depends what the problem is, too. The urgent thing to do is take steps to remove the bad smell, whoever ends up paying!
@bw - French law is riddled with Latin terms! Ignorantia juris non excusat being another one!!
