Default EDF Tariff

Trying to unravel the mysteries of the electricity in my house. We have a wonderfull trip box in a utility room but also another very large trip switch in the cellar..which is only accessed by going outside the house when it is bound to be raining and of course pitch black.
My EDF bill shows we have 12KW and have HP & HC to heat the storage tank overnight. Why oh why does it trip for seemingly no reason..and nearly always in the cellar. Is it we should not switch on electric kettle when dishwasher and/or tumble drier and or washing machine are on???
How can I remedy...oher than not making cups of tea / dirty dishes /..don't even think about the clothes...Thanks ( I really do enjoy sitting in the dark and stumbling down to the cellar)

Hi there,

I've had the same problem and couldn't believe my own stupidity as the answer is simple (hopefully for you too).

We have so many power cuts here that you have to re-set your time clock many times during the year. It may be out of sinc - check it!!

Hi Les. Is your electricity supply 3-phase? 12KW = 12,000 watts. When you consider that a kettle is at least 2,000, a heater or two another 4 or so, and then a chauff-eau at 2,500 or more, it soon adds up. You only need to plug in a deep-fat frier, or put the dishwasher on and 'pop'!

I have similar problems here, but so do many of us in rural France. There are many reasons why your supply could trip. One of the main culprits is that with 3-phase, the separate phases may not be 'balanced'. Before you do up the ante on the tariff, have an electricien check the balance of the phases for you. It's often the case that something 'heavy' load wise may well be sharing a phase with something else, therefore unbalancing that particular phase. Your master trip-switch the thinks there's a problem and turns everything off. It may just be the case that you do indeed need to think about what you have on and when?
