Re: Cold feet ?
Hi Dmu, we know about the 5 dogs rule but ours are show dogs and so are exempt fron the ruling as long as we can show proof of entry to a show, see here :
Attention : Lorsque le déplacement a lieu dans le cadre d'expositions, de concours ou de manifestations sportives, le nombre maximal de carnivores domestiques (chiens, chats, furets) peut excéder 5 si les animaux sont âgés de plus de 6 mois et qu'une preuve écrite de leur enregistrement à concourir ou participer à de tels événements peut être présentée. |

We chose the Lot region as I have family in Cahors and we have had holidays there and so have gotten to know the area well. . Also the British expat community is well established there which would I think make the transition easier for my hubby. We would continue to show the dogs ( there are quite a few Championnat shows in the Perigord and Lot region ) and so hopefully get to know other 'dog folk' in the area. But you're right to ask what moving to France would give us that staying here would'nt - the weather perhaps and we'd get rid of the mortgage but otherwise ?????.
My problem with moving to the Lot or other such areas is what do you do all day. Personally, I would hate to hang out with Brit expats listening to them whine/go on about about French driving, French bureaucracy, French Food, telly ect. I would go mad. Really, it all boils down to the type of house you intend to buy and where. You will be unlikely unable to rent so if you do decide to move you need to buy a house that you can easily sell (within months not years) if you want to move back WITHOUT losing any money. That includes the removal to France and back to the UK. That will be harder said than done in the cliche expat areas. |
Re: Cold feet ?
Grondemon123 - this thread will go the same way as all the other threads with BE members just re-stating their prejudices and making you feel you need to justify yourselves.
The trouble is that as we get older is it becomes more difficult to make big changes in our lives, perhaps because we become more conscious that we don't have the same ability to recover from mistakes. But it sounds like you have done your homework and you know the area you want to move to. Apart from the cold winters, the Cahors region is fabulous and I imagine you could be very happy there. If you have any specific questions ask away (in a new thread) as folks on here have an amazing amount of collective knowkedge. If not, well good luck to both of you. |

You'll have problems finding somewhere to rent before buying, unless you can leave your dogs in the UK while you're looking around here. |

. I do not whine / go on/ complain about France and I suspect that many members on BE are the same. I appreciate the different culture and lifestyle in France and I often find myself reinforcing the strengths of French language and culture to the French where they are complaining about their own society. Not all expats whine on about France but quietly enjoy the lifestyle etc. they chose. |

Trouble is that there are people move to France primarily because property seems cheap, they haven't chosen France for the lifestyle and they sometimes find they don't like it and wish it was like the UK with pubs, 7 days a week shopping, everybody speaking English etc. They get the house of their dreams but it turns into a prison because they don't feel comfortable outside their front gate, and once they can't think of any more work to do on the house they have a lot of empty days with naff all to occupy them. Having a beautiful house is not in itself enough to make a fulfilling life - it's a good basis but you need to build on it. IMHO. However the OP has a head start because they have an interest that they can bring with them, they know the area, they have family and one of them speaks French. But only they know if it's what they really want. |

That is fine, but some of these areas (you just have to read around the forums) have become toxic with disappointed Brits having a go at the French/French society and each other for that matter because they have not found a place in the sun. They even whine about their neighbour who invariably turns out to be British LOL. I personally would stay well clear of these areas on this basis. Would you want to live in a French village where half the people are British ? For me these places don't and will never work. Eymet (50 % British) is a real disaster. If I move back to the UK I don't want (nor would my OH) to live in a village where most people are French nationals. For long term happiness choose your location/region carefully. There are plenty to choose from It does not have to be in the same cliche/ryanair direct flight areas. |

And I don't think you can judge the real France by reading virtual French forums. Everybody on a forum is, by definition, weird - and some are more weird than others  |

Re: Cold feet ?
Well here's one who is a weird not normal retired expat and proud of it.
I lived in the LOT for 25 years and always found it a good place to be, not the pits as a certain person here is always posting. If you need any personal advise just contact me. I also have a property for sale in the lot which is very dog friendly. |
