How do you know? It may be obvious from the building methods but while trying to trace the history of our house in Normandy I got stymied at the Revolution.

Architectural evidence, especially in the outhouses, suggests it's much older but there are no records that I can so far find.

I spend quite a long time researching after I first moved in and tracked down useful snippets from various sources, including the online departmental archives. Can't remember what I found where now, but I did find a number of dated cadastrale plans / street plans showing the individual buildings, and also one dated image of the street. It probably helps that there's a very large and elegant manor house, built around the same date, 3 doors away at the end of the ruelle (the ruelle was probably a row of workers' cottages), clearly the manor house was important locally and attracted a fair bit of attention, so this bit of town is better documented than most parts.

Thanks for that ET. Our place is immediately next door to the local church and I'm told that our back garden was originally a graveyard. I'm convinced (but cannot document) that the outhouses were at one time associated with the church and graveyard. The main part of the house is "younger" but was certainly there in 1795. I'd love to trace it back further when I have the time.

Get yer spade out and and get any remains you find carbon dated, obviously don't do this if the ex is in the back garden....

Would old maps help? When doing the Tree for people (I do Genealogy too lol) I try to find really old maps of areas...It sometimes helps with families that have stayed in one area and house, If the house was still there in say 1660, there is a chance the family might be......Old Maps might help in giving you an approximate date of your house ;)
