Yes. People are still doing and you can lose or make money depending on your original choice of property and the work you do and yes, luck.

Which are "the good parts"? Don't know about now, we made 120,000 euros 3 years ago, but paid 16,000 of it to the good ole tax man as you pay on the DIFFERENCE between the price you bought it and the price you sell it at NOT the profit made. No claims for materials used either, so not sure, and the market is dodgy at the moment - as a so-called Expert on Investment Banking said on Working Lunch the other day,

"It could go up or it could go down"

Well, m8, my expertise runs to jam-making and that's it, but even I could have said that on National TV without worrying about getting it wrong.

I do know one golden rule and that is any profit made is largely dependent upon the buying price, so possibly, but you'd have to negotiate hard, buy really well, do most of the work yourself, be lucky when you sell, and there's no substitute for knowing your target buyers in the area you choose. Rural French areas might have what appear to be bargains, but with low wages in those areas, you may end up with a property no French person in that area can afford to buy, therefore cutting your market considerably.

Think the previous answer was pretty good - how long is a piece of string?

On reflection I think it's preferable to buy in France as FRANCE is too noisy.

Sorry, I too forget capitals are shouting sometimes - when I put the word "difference" in caps above, I was trying to emphasise it - shall try to find a different colour or something!

Old tinnitus playing up again Tres?

A good question. Certainly to try it the UK or USA right now you'd have to have guts, talent and lady luck on your side, but purse strings in France are also getting tighter, and I've already seen many a horror story of expats being stuck with unsellable homes here. I'm sure it can be done, but I'd approach with caution.

If you are a registered tax payer in France, then you do not pay capital gains tax on profit made when you sell your house, and if you've had work carried out by a registered builder/artisan, you can claim this amount back each year on your tax return.
you will find more information if you do a search on Google, as well as on this website
