Default Auvergne

Hello,
I am British, been living in Canada for five years and now come home to Europe to live in France. I am looking in the Auvergne for a property for me and the menagerie I am doing this solo as widowed a few years ago and both children now in their twenties, graduated - one in Canada, one in UK.
I found an old thread on this forum last date March 2008 so would like to know if there are any Brits and/or other English speakers living in the Auvergne already. I speak good French and spent a lot of time there in the past. I am presently in Brittany with friends (+ menagerie) and hope to be able to get to the Auvergne in the next few days (strike permitting )

Any info/thoughts/contacts/opinions about life in the Auvergne would be helpful and gratefully received. Thank you.

Hi Paloma,
I went househunting in Auvergne earlier in the year, as I love the landscape here. Unfortunately my experience wasn't so positive. Firstly the houses I'd gone to see all had quite major problems (damp issues etc), and the prices seem to have risen quite a lot for what I had thought was the cheapest region of France. Having a baby and another one on the way, the other concern I had was that quite a few of the houses are quite isolated, and winters are long and very harsh (being a Canadian, that may not be an issue at all for yourself!). I still love Auvergne (neighbouring North Ardeche is also a good place to look at too), it just didn't end up suitable for us.

Your needs are obviously different from my own. I think you will find the food very agreeable, the locals friendly, and the landscape beautiful. There are Brits there, and it seems to have become more popular in recent times having spoken to some of the locals who talk about the increased number of British having moved to the area. When I first went to the region some years ago now, there were virtually no British in the region.

Thanks for the feedback - and welcome. I am not Canadian - I am British but have lived through five Canadian winters now (which I enjoyed in fact). I'm going to keep looking and I'm searching for a renovation project so fingers crossed. Hope to be on the road next week.
