Default Border Security

Saw this on Canadian TV and understand Australia started it. Same question on the CA forum. How the hell is this not an invasion of privacy? Do people get told their rights, and that they can choose not to be filmed?

Yep.

Been through Melbourne airport when they were filming and there was a notice up saying you could choose not to be filmed.

Of course, that would probably mean they thought you had something to hide...

One must remember Australia has no Bill/Charter of Rights.

Not really, they have to get your written consent if they are going to even consider using the footage in a show. I had to sign a release authority years ago for "Location, Location, Location - Australia".

It's the same as if you ring a company or government department, you have the right to advise them to stop the recording of the conversation, and by law they have to do it. Nothing to do with Bill of Right etc, but under the Privacy Act.

Causes no end of hassle for us, as it means we have to transfer the call to someone's mobile, as ALL our lines are recorded, and often used in Commissions of Enquiry etc.

Kind of on topic but not, we had the JFK version on earlier and some dumb woman, just flown in from Nigeria I think, had ticked 'no' to 'are you bringing food in' because she didn't understand the questions, so she had all her bags opened, when she complained, the US Border official said, and I quote 'we have to be careful because the English may be bringing in Mad Cow disease'. Light blue touch paper..... we all started swearing at the tv.
