I think you'd be better off buying the camera in one of the German online
retailers (www.guenstiger.de is a good search
engine). You might get the
camera also in Singapore or Hong Kong, but you'd have to make sure that
the warranty is valid also in your country.

cheaper than from where? The US has the lowest electronics prices. if
you are from US, you are better off buying here before you leave.
Try good online shop like www.bhphoto.com
($120.00 for international
shipping) or www.adorama.com. if your country
is not gonna slam VAT or
tariff on the items sent to you from the US, you will save enough to
cover the $120.00 shipping charge, and some left you can use to buy
other accessories.

I agree the german store has decent prices on digi camera. the question
is, is it really price, some onlines are not to be trusted. I think
there is no tarriff between the EU countries.

They will. B&H will supply them with a proper customs declaration
form, which is to the advantage of the receiver since otherwise the
value would be assessed based on the prices in the receiving country.

I doubt that they will describe the goods as a gift, or as a sample.
That would be interpreted by the customs authorities in the receiving
country as collaborating in smuggling and tax cheating and they would
put B&H on the watchlist. That means B&H goods would be held up longer
in customs, and other B&H customers would be unhappy. I would be
very surprised if an established American company did this. (But
you can probably guess who will).

When you send a package as a private citizen you use the small green
sticker to declare the contents. You are also declaring that it's not
a commercial shipping, that is you don't get any money in return.

There are many situations when you can legally avoid paying VAT on
goods that you buy abroad, but this is not one of them. There
are also many situations where you are likely to slip through the
net (and can claim ignorance if caught) but the customs authorities
are watching packages from known e-tailers more closely these days.

I've never heard of a German online store which cheated people.

That's right
Not being a german, i can confirm that no on-line shop in the world is more
reliable and committing than the on-line shops in Germany

just as someone said before, there are suckers born every minutes, you
know what there are people ready to take advantage of them.
When shopping on line, one has to know that some merchants pull the bait
and switch scheme, charge your card but do not ship your items for days
or months, do not except return, ship partially used items, charge you
for the return item, take you hours, hundreds of dallors trying to
contact with them, etc.

Maybe, but once again I've never heard of somebody complaining about
having been cheated by a German online retailer (haven't seen any posts
in the German usenet groups I follow and none in the Italian digital
photography group). I might add that there are many Italians ordering
their camera from German online stores, because the price, service and
reliability are better.
But I have heard horror stories of people ordering things from US online
retailers, which probably is why in the US there are sites such as
resellerratings.com (but none like that in Germany).

Might differences in libel law have an effect?

Sorry haven't been to Taiwan. All I can tell you is that they are way too expensive in Thailand and Singapore, but can be picked up for a reasonable price in Malaysia
