Moving to europe from the UK - advice please
Hi all, I've been thinking for a while about moving from the UK to somewhere in mainland europe (e.g. Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Belgium). I currently work for an airline in Finance (for 9 years) but have no major qualifications/degrees etc. How easy would it be to just move to one of these countries and get a job (doesn't have to be in the finance environment, could just be in a shop/pub/hotel etc etc). I've got some savings and can always sell my car and other assets etc. I have no ties to the UK, only family and friends. I know that I'd probably have to learn the relevant language also. I'm in my early 30s. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The countries you've mentioned all generally have high standards and unless you have some particular skill to take there it'll be pretty hard to get a decent job, especially one which would allow you to live well enough to feel justified about making a move abroad. Some seasonal tourist industry work might be possible, but that wouldn't be much of a living, more just for a short-term experience.
You might consider trying some of the countries farther east, but within the EU (it'll be easier to stick to the EU countries, no faffing around with work permits or residency issues).
If you are really desperate to get out, you could consider investing some of your savings in a CELTA or some related certification course and becoming a language teacher. Doesn't pay wonderfully but it does mean you have a few more options as to where you move. Not having a degree may hinder you to some extent, but you can get around that.
Good luck!

Thanks Azarel, that's a fair comment. I will look into these courses that you kindly recommend. And also look at further eastern countries too. The reason I want to leave the UK is personal (nothing dodgy though). Thanks again.

Thanks ptrjakson. I went on a family holiday years ago to Zell Am See which was a lovely place. Would you suggest this as a good area, or even suggest others?

Hi,I live in sweden and know of people who have moved here and gained employment, but it is a hard slog and the cost of living is high so savings would be quickly diminished.
It is possible to get free Swedish lessons ( SFI )and the Swedish employment office can help with work placements to help you gain experience. Life is very structured here and it doesn't suit everybody, you have to be very determined.
On the up side the standard of living is higher and the lifestyle is far more relaxed in my experience.
Being in the EU you don't need a work or residency permit you just have to register with the migration office and the tax office for a person number.
Visiting the doctor incurs a nominal charge but health standards are pretty good.
I would recommend that if you intend to relocate any where in the world you do some research and at least visit the country before taking the plunge.

I travel around Europe alot and the best thing to do is try and get a job first then buy a house. Mallorca is a great place.
