Moving to EU after Brexit
I have a friend who apparently has difficulties registering on this forum so publishing the following on his behalf:
1. As UK is now in a post-brexit transition period, does that mean that UK citizens can still relocate on pre-brexit terms to any EU country? 2. Will those Brits who relocated after Brexit but before the end of transition period be able to keep living and working indefinitely in the same EU state after that transition period is over? 3. If answers to questions 1 and 2 vary from country to country, what countries would be a yes to both questions? |
Re: Moving to EU after Brexit
1. Yes
2. Yes - so long as they register locally as a resident in whatever country they relocate to. Just showing up and renting a house is unlikely to be sufficient. 3. N/A |

Thank you.
Also, if he relocates to one of EU counties during the transition period and register for residence there will he be able to move to another EU country on the same pre-prexit conditions after the transition period is over? |

But on a practical note, how would your friend find a job and get disability benefits, as per your other thread, if he's moving around? |
Re: Moving to EU after Brexit
If your friend moved to (for example) Holland (a Schengen country) and gained a resident permit, that permit would, together with a valid national passport, act as a temporary visa to visit (not live in) other Schengen countries.

Which isn't go to be any incremental help as a British passport holder will be able to visit (not live in) Schengen countries without a visa anyway.

Re: Moving to EU after Brexit
As I understand it, it is pretty unlikely that a Brit living in one EU country before 31/12/20 will be able to go live in another one afterwards (unless of course they apply for a special visa as any other third-country national).

I have a sneaking suspicion though that there may be a legal challenge at some point by someone (British) who availed themselves of the freedom of movement allowed pre-Brexit, and who is now unable to move to another EU country, so somewhat analogous to a non-EU spouse who is allowed to follow their EU spouse from country to country under the "freedom of movement" provisions even though they don't have a passport from an EU country. |
