As someone just going about their daily life in Bulgaria you will never really come into contact with "Mafia" or much corruption. Much is still done on a local level and a bottle of whiskey to the local mayor can move things a long for example. But unless get court up in court system say or you intend to meddle in drugs, prostitution etc then you'll be fine!

My daughter worked as a resort administrator for one of the holiday companies in Bulgaria; the Police towed their company car away and wouldn't release it till they paid a weekly charge to park in their own parking space in their own office complex - bloody crooks.

Often parking spaces cost extra and are not just free because they are part of your complex. And special permits needed.

The car park slot was part of the lease deal that had been signed with the landlord - even had their own "reserved" sign on the post. In short - the local police were crooks.

The resorts are very different from "proper" Bulgaria.
