Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
Vetassess is solely aimed at tradesmen seeking permanent residency. Considering you have to to do an in depth practical and theory test and provide the same amount of detailed evidence as for an ARTC it is certainly not easier. The reverse is true and a lot more expensive to boot. On whether you would have to go thru Vetassess when you return from your WHV and want to seek permanent residency, this I don't know. Common sense would dictate not. Hopefully, someone else might be able to answer that one. Regards Derren
haha i think we have crossed wires so to speak. I meant why would somebody go down the VETASSESS route when the ARTC option is cheaper. Cheers for your reply. If you did have to do VETASSESS after becoming licensed on a WHV, that would be ridiculous although no doubt probable given how difficult this whole process is.

Hi Warren , congrats on gaining your licence. I think you've paved an excellent alternative to the PEER route and the info you have provided is excellent. I've just a couple of of quick questions for you . On your ARTC application form did you provide your Aussie address as current home/ residential address ? And where it asks what date did you arrive in Australia ,what dates did you enter seeing as you were applying from the UK. Also, did you have much trouble getting past employers to give you detailed reference? I've done a lot of agency work so they probably not electrically qualified to supply a detailed reference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Again, well done. Kind regards Derren
2,on date's i just put a date near to when i was dew to arrive in oz,
3,i'd work for a company for 12years, i had no worries, try get some electrical company you've worked/agency's to to write something up. the company secretary wrote mine! she knows nothing about electric's! i just told her what she should put in there ect ect and the director signed it off, easy.
Warren.
ps, ONCE YOU HAVE A LIECENCE IT@S VALID FOR 5 YEARS!! no one can take it off you even if you leave for a couple for years inbetween, also when i/you go for your peramanent residency, you already have a Australian qualification!!

Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
So I apply for an WHV and then an ARTC through TRA? Then I need to go to WA in order to get my license? So say I "rock" up in Oz with an ARTC, how long will it take to get a license and then transfer that to somewhere I want to be ie Queensland? Also if I get licensed then, and have to go home when my WHV runs out, would I then be able to apply for other visa's cos I am licensed or would VETASSESS come into it again?
Which visa do you have?
Also with the 2nd year option on the WHV (the 3mth work thingy, it lists construction work, would working as a sparkie cover this).
Thanks in advance

Once you have you licence!!! you have it for keep's (well you renew every 5 years) then when you go to a different state you go to the governing body in that state and get it changed over, just like that, plus a few bob i suppose
Warren,
ps, the rest you'll have to read up on (whv), or email people in power there very good at replying.

Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
Also Warren, does your license for WA say electrical mechanic or electrician? Is it an A grade license? Just read through it and it seems pretty cool. Is there a definition of electrical mechanic that can be found anywhere. Cheers dude. Are you employed in Perth now, have you faced any trouble?
my licence says electricians licence certificate of registration, all new licences in perth now for mechanic do, but if you are a fitter they dont!! they say fitter!!!!!!!!!
yes i'm working in perth, its all good, was a bit hard getting a job before i got my licence because there cracking down on unlicences workers, but now i have it (licence) people are falling over themselves to offer a job.

Hi all,
These are the step i took to get my WA Electrical Mechanic Licence,
My wife's a nurse so i already had my 457visa (the hard part)
1, 1st sep 2009 applied for a ARTC (from england). http://www.deewr.gov.au/Skills/Progr...owToApply.aspx payed $300 as a fitter, (wrong!! always apply for mechanic) but i did'nt know at the time, anyway they classed me as a Mechanic as all i used to do in England was installation not fix/breakdown stuff.
you need a Australian address for ARTC so i used my cousin's who live's in Perth. cheeky eh!!
22 oct 2009 received my received my Australian Recognized Trade Certificate though the post, brill!!
2, 6th nov 2009, emailed energy safe to apply for my licence,
http://www.docep.wa.gov.au/EnergySaf...kers/index.htm
payed a application fee $38, posted them a copy of my ARTC, they told me that i needed to complete a two week coarse ETL at college of electrical training Balcatta, http://www.cet.asn.au/home.aspx, before they could issue a licence.
3, 9th nov 2009, emailed cet (collage of electrical training) about ETL course,
http://www.cet.asn.au/home.aspx
energy safe had already contacted them and passed on my details (i was impressed) payed the course fee's $860, they booked me in on the course date's 7th-18th dec full time 40hour per week, great course great teachers too, passed with flying colours (you'd need to be a idiot to fail).
4, 21st dec 2009, rang energy safe ((08)94225282) payed for my licence $335, they'd received results from the college,
29th dec 2009 received my licence though the post!!!! yippee
yes it was that easy. thank's to steve'o for help along the way,
if i can do it, SO CAN YOU!!!!
good luck everyone,
Warren.

My husband and I have been talking about moving to Aus (Perth) for 5 years now and are finaly coming out to visit in a couple of weeks (my sister lives in Perth).
I know we need to apply for the 457 visa and we have completed the points section so we just need to apply. How long does it take to come through/be accepted?
My husband has been with his current firm for 12 years he does installation. When should he apply for his WA Electrical Mechanic Licence? can we do it now?
Also what sort of work is he likely to find in Perth? is their much about?
Sorry for all the questions
Thanks
Colette

Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
hi to all new sparkies in WAtrying to get a WA electrical licence,i got trade recognised as a electrical fitter, dont know why when i did city and guilds electrical installation in uk,did the appropiate tests which due to numbers trying to do it took 3mths,passed got my licence, what the licence does allow is that after 12mths you can get a letter from your employer saying you can do installation work,if the letter is accepted you bypass the practical mechanic test and only have to do the short theory exam which im doing 2morrow,once i had the fitters lic i had no trouble getting work in the mining industry, they are so short of tradesmen that only having a fitters lic didnt seem to be a prob or thou most of the work i do is maintenance work,so guys dont get to worried if you get only a fitters lic just do what i did and do the mechanics test later, you really only need the mechanics lic if you want to go in to construction work straight away...

Got WA licence through ELC but now trying to change to QLD licence i've run into problems. When you do the ELC course you do not get the certificate 3 in electrotechnology electrician,When you try to change for QLD licence they ask for this.So it's not as easy as you think.

Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
Hi Warren
Thanks for the info. I was granted my ARTC as a elec mech and I got it sent to an address in Perth as I am not in OZ yet. When I told TRA I was going to live in Perth they had my ARTC assessed by the WA electrical authority. I was wondering could I do my wiring regs through Peer or would I have to do the 2 week course that you did as my ARTC was assessed by WA and not SA. Thanks

Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
em..
Well a ARTC is australian wide so i dont know why they send it to WA?
i live and work in WA and have never had anything to do with SA, is this were you wish to live?
the whole purpose of getting a ARTC is to avoid peers!! so yes do the two week course, then apply for your WA licence, just apply to http://www.docep.wa.gov.au/EnergySaf...kers/index.htm with your ARTC and they will tell you to book on the http://www.cet.asn.au/home.aspx, ETL wiring course.
they are in the proccess of changing the whole system soon to allow electrician to work OZ wide on one licence, but this could take years.....
are you over here yet? have you got your visa yet?
alot of people have followed my post and got there licence easy, including a collogue of mine, is mrs was a nurse too,
hope this helps, if not feel free to ask more Q, i'll help where i can, do you need a job?

Re: WA Electrical Mechanic Certificate in 4 months, so easy.
Hi Warren
Thanks for the reply.
It states in my approval letter that my ARTC was assessed by the WA trades comitee so I wasnt sure if it was specific to WA. But yeah it is valid nationwide so all good in that respect.
Im not in Oz yet but I have had my PR visa since 2007. I went over to validate my visa in 2008 but had to come back because I couldnt sell my house. I will be moving to Greenwood in Perth next year. I was under the impression that Peer was the quickest and easiest way to pass the wiring regs and then get your SA licence and then transfer it to a WA licence, but I suppose when you take into consideration the cost of flights and hotel to do it at Peer it might be worth doing the course in Perth? Can you or anyone else shed a little more light on this as I was going to do the peer course/workbook via the UK but not sure now.
I am glad to hear there is plenty of work and I cant wait to get there now. I work on large commercial projects in the UK but I am hoping to find work in the mines or on gorgon and get some money behind me. I will have to do a couple of courses to get my foot in the door and have some in mind. Have you or anyone you know made the transition from commercial to industrial?
