Default proving work experience -self employed electrician in U.K

My husband is an electrician in U.K & has always been self employed. he is applying for a qualification certificate at the AIT in Alberta to allow him to then write the exam. How have others in a similar position proved their work experience. Are letters from sub-contractors o.k.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Hi Anita,

References from people your husband has worked for will be fine. Although they do need to be very prescriptive about the things he did for them and the tools he used. We wrote our own reference and got OH's "employer" to sign it.

We also wrote a statutory declaration to cover the period as one of the places Nick worked for went bust so couldn't get anything from them and as he was a subbie, we did not have business cards or proper tax returns as he was on the CIS scheme. Try to put as much detail as you can in the info you provide. List of tools, all tax forms, CIS slips if you have them, references, invoices, pictures with explanations of your OH doing the work. If you think it relevant.... put it in. This is for an Australian application but I imagine it won't be very different.

Hope this helps!
