Hello
My family and I have been thinking of emigrating to North Cyprus. I would like some advise.
What is the minimum wage in cyprus? I am thinking of going to university in cyprus but am not sure as I have heard that the universities are not recognised anywhere else. Is this true?
What are the downsides to living in north cyprus?

Why NORTH Cyprus?
Have you done your research? There are loads of problems in the North with properties which are illegally built and could end up having to be demolished and the rightful owners of the land having to be compensated.
As for universities, the infrastructure in the North is very poor and as Northern Cyprus is not recognised by any country other than Turkey any qualifications you achieve there are very unlikely to be recognised elsewhere.
The only thing that draws people to the North is the cheap properties but how cheap will they be if the rightful owner of the land reclaims it andthe properties have to be demolished?

We have chosen North cyprus because we have relatives living there. Thankyou for your advise. If we decide to emigrate and buy a property, we will make sure that it will be a turkish title deed property.

You must make sure that the title deeds are pre 1974 turkish owned and issued by the land registry in Nicosia. Turkish issued title deeds are no good.
The illegal government of Northern Cyprus have been known to issue false title deeds for Greek Cypriot owned land. You must check out the legality of any deeds with the government in the South of the island to safeguard yourself.

There are problems with title deeds both North and South of the Island. No doubt you will be told to look for PRE 74 Title deeds in the North but I will warn you that foreigners are not being granted these deeds. You will be paying for a home you will never own. I would not buy exchange or Turkish Title as they are now being called, because they belong to the GC the fled to the south in 74..
Cyprus is also becoming known for mortgages being taken out by the developer before you have actually got your deeds. The legal system does little to protect buyers from corruption. However obviously the south is in the EU so you do have more protection.
I would recommend that people rent.

The North is beautiful but the south is a far safer bet. You can cross the Island south to north in a couple of hours so you can always visit. If you must, then please do not consider buying anything, it is just not worth it, but Veronica is the expert, please heed her advice.

If you buy you must make sure that you check the deeds with the land registry in Nicosia to find out if the land was pre 1974 Turkish owned.
Use a solicitor in the South to check these things for you.

Your wife will have no problems getting title deeds to pre 74 Turkish Title if she is TC. It is only foreigners being prevented from buying this particular deed.I would advise you to tread very carefully. The law in the TRNC does not safeguard buyers and I'm sorry to say that scams are common. All deeds are now called Turkish Title so you cannot always differentiate between GC owned property and genuine pre 74 Turkish Title. You need to get the land or property verified as genuine pre 74 by going to the land registry in the South. You would be mad to buy anything other than pre 74 Turkish title deeds as the ECHR states that the property is legally owned by the Refugee that fled in 74.In the future you might end up with all sorts of problems. There is also an ethical and moral issue to doing this.
There is advice being given on the Cyprus 44 forum,
"no kocan, no money" I would advise you to stick to this and do not let anyone persuade you otherwise.

No, not unless the deeds are pre 1974 issued by Nicosia. If deeds are issued by the Turkish government they might not be legal. Even so called exchange land is not always legitimate as the Greek Cypriot owners have not always agreed to an exchange.

Hi and thanks for allowing me to become a member.I've tried Cyprus44.com but they accept those who support their ideology.I'm a British citizen with Cypriot origine myself and was in England when Turkey decided to occupy the northern part of the island and violating Human Rights.A lot of properties in the occupied area are owned by British Citizens like my self and i cannot imagine another Brit or European to build on my land as the consiquenses will be very dissasterous. So i urge those with different ideas to think different and look things from my side.Another issue i've noticed is that agents in the occupied part are 'selling'properties in 'kirne' 'lapta' 'gusselhyrt' and others names of towns and villages which are not excisting on the official Map of Cyprus which they passed on to the Republic of Cyprus.I hope people they can take this serious so they can avoid a dissaster. Many thanks
