Hello,

UK citizen moving back to UK with American wife and two kids in summer of 2014. When should we start visa proceedings? Is it wise to wait or is the visa valid for a long time after its given?

Im pretty sure you have to travel with in a certain time frame, it could be six months.

Usually one would travel within 3 months. Obviously things may change before 2014 about the validity of the visas

With regards a spouse visa it would be issued for 33 months, and can be used anytime up to that end date. HOWEVER, if you delay entering the country by over, I think, 3 months of the issue date, this affects the date at which you can apply for permanent residency. Nowadays there are two visa issues to go through to get permanent residency - must have been resident in the UK for 5 years.

You can only apply for a visa up to three months prior to your move. Current processing times are between 4 to 10 weeks.
