Hi all - as the title of this post may suggest, my wife has gained her UK citizenship (thanks in no small part to the help from this forum in navigating the process). Her citizenship ceremony was a lovely moment - not least seeing all the other people collecting their certificates - especially families doing it together.

Now we have one final (!) step - applying for a passport.

It seems that you are required to do this via the paper route, so we've started filling in the form.

In section 4, we are completing her family information which requests details of her parents (including date of marriage).

It also asks for:

"If either parent was born on or after 1 January 1983, or were born outside the UK, please give the following details in section 8 of the application form. Either: the full name, town, country of birth and date of marriage of your mother’s or parent 1’s parents and your father’s or parent 2’s parents, or details of your parents’ claim to British nationality."

We don't know all of this for both sides of her family (eg her grandparents place of birth and date of marriage). Can we just make it clear they have no claim to British nationality, but that isn't the route to citizenship in this case? She is applying for a passport as a naturalised citizen, so surely it doesn't matter? Can we just say this in the "More information" section?

Also, in the "How to apply" one section seems to imply she needs to send in her 'full' birth certificate and that of one of her parents. We hadn't seen this elsewhere, but are now confused.

Any tips on what supporting documents/information we need to send would be helpful (We know we need the application form, photos and counter-signatory, naturalisation certificate, foreign passport).

One of my colleagues became a naturalised citizen a few years ago and said she was able to apply for a passport at the same time. It arrived a week after her ceremony. I guess that was too sensible an idea to keep!

Your wife can use the online or paper form. If she uses the paper form then it won’t tailor the answers to her circumstances. Just fill in as much as you can. Ultimately her parents’ details are irrelevant as she is a naturalised British citizen. The list of supporting documents you state is all that is needed.

Ok thanks. This whole process (from the very first step of applying for the initial spouse visa) feels like it’s stuck between paper and online, with various docs seeming to suggest paper is needed for some things, but then other places not needing it.

We’ve already filled in the paper form, so will just submit that!

Sent in a paper application about 10 days ago. Got a message to say the application was approved about 5 days later, and the passport arrived today!

we have just done ours.
On line is easiest and you don't need any birth certificates. Just the certificate of naturalisation and a previous original country passport.
