Liverpool Passport Office has half a million backlog
Workers in Liverpool’s passport office could go on strike as their union rows with government over backlogs.
The Public and Commercial Services union said job cuts over the past five years have led to a “crisis” with long delays dealing with applications.
Travellers now face waits of two months and upwards to get their documents from offices across the UK, they say.
The union warns it will consider taking industrial action if the issue is not tackled by the end of the month.
The union said over 300 jobs had been lost in recent years and over 20 offices had closed.
Staff were trying to deal with a backlog of almost half a million cases, said the PCS.

Re: Liverpool Passport Office has half a million backlog
Because of the EU changes on the back of McCarthy, it was better for EUs in the UK to not get UK citizenship. Now with the MEP results showing UKIP taking over England from the Tories; the in/out vote if the Tories get in and now Cameron threatening to bring the in/out vote forward it the EU doesn't change, it seems many EEAs would rather get safe than risk it.

EEA citizens wanting to became British citizens would need to naturalise first. They don't need a British passport, just a naturalisation certificate. If there was going to be a backlog it'll be at the Home Office nationality office, not the Passport Office.
The passport backlog is a perfect storm of job cuts, onshoring of all overseas applications together the overseas fee reduction, an improving economy and the usual summer rush.

Re: Liverpool Passport Office has half a million backlog
When you add these to other people wanting passports, it creates a backlog i.e. Brits renewing their red passposts; non-EUs applying for their first UK passport; passports for newborns; those with long expired red passports and the much more time consuming, those with expired blue/black passports.
People will have to make sure they renew/apply for, their passports well before they want to travel.

From the news this morning via the BBC Breakfast twitter..

Minister @JBrokenshire tells #bbcbreakfast 250 extra staff have been drafted in to deal with the current passport application backlog.

Immigration minister @JBrokenshire tells us passport applications at a 12 year high, and normal busy summer period started earlier this year

They seem to want to go the whole hog, naturalise and get their UK passport too. Why wouldn't they?

That said I have been encouraging all my EEA friends and colleagues in the UK to naturalise as soon as possible.

The numbers don't add up. The Home Office wouldn't physically be able to naturalise people fast enough for it to have any meaning effect on the passport backlog.
