I am a British Citizen, born in the UK. My children were both born overseas so are British Citizens by Descent. My question relates to how their children (my grandchildren) can obtain British Citizenship if they too are born overseas.

Specifically I understand that if my children live in the UK for at least 3 years before their children are born then my grandchildren can obtain British Citizenship. Can this 3 year period be at any time in my children’s life?

For example the following scenario: I return to the UK now with my two young children for a period of 3 years. We then move overseas again. At some point in the future my grandchildren are born overseas. Will my grandchildren be British citizens by Descent as my children met the 3 year residency requirement in their youth?

The three years needs to be consecutive and before the birth of your grandchildren. Other than that, it can be at any time. If they are very small then ensuring that there is a sufficient paper trail can be more difficult later on so I would try and gather as much as you can as you go.

That's great thanks. My children are school age so I'd imagine that school attendence records and any UK entry/exit details would be suitable evidence of time in country.
