British passport, Canadian spouse
Hi, my wife and I would like to move to the UK but what with all the changes in the immigration laws etc we're rather lost. Before we head off to an Embassy to get the official word we'd like to get some good advice here first.
Our situation:
- both of us were born in Canada.
- my wife holds a British Passport.
- we were married (in Canada) 2003.
- we've lived, worked and paid our taxes in the EU (not UK) since 2005.
- we're both self-employed and have been for many years.
The question is simple really: will we be allowed entry into the UK and if so under what permits, visas, etc?
My worry is the financial requirements I've been reading about that seem to have come into effect this year. Her income alone (self-employment) does not meet the £18000+ minimum, our combined income is more than double that and has been for some years. We would not qualify under the savings portion of the financial requirements.
On the upside it seems that being from a Commonwealth country may make a difference. Or not. Confusion sets it.
Any guidance or insight would be appreciated. Ty.

Is there any option to gain local citizenship? (French citizenship, etc?)

Not in the short term. Local citizenship would require language skills that I simply don't have. If it was necessary as part of a longer term strategy then possibly yes. Certainly not the way we wanted to go about things.
