Applying for spouse visa. Do children need British passports?
I am a British citizen married to an American woman. I'm about to apply for her to immigrate to the UK. I am exempt from the £18,600 income requirement.
We have two children, the younger of whom (a British citizen through me, but born in the U.S.) does not yet have a British passport. He only has an American passport. He will be moving here with my wife when she immigrates.
Do I need to apply for a British passport for our child before we can send off for my wife's immigration? If we don't get him a British passport, will he be treated for immigration purposes as a non-British dependent of my wife's for whom I would need to show financial maintenance?
Thanks for your replies.

Yes you need to get him a British passport.
Without it you are going to get questions at Immigration when he enters the UK. In addition, without the UK passport he will only get a visitor stamp when he enters the UK, so you have to get him a Brit passport at some time.
