Default Ancestry Visa UK how long does it take

My Partner is Canadian with a British (Yorkshire born) Grandfather. We are looking at applying for his Ancestry Visa,
Its states we have to give over the Cdn passport to the Immigration Office, and supply documents. My question is this
he is retired now and so doesnt have a job, what does he put down in the section that covers that. He is willing to work
but currently doesnt have any job offers, how do we get around this?
Any idea how long its taking now....its says 3 months, but with Covid offices not always open Im wondering if anyone can
say how long theirs took?
Has anyone paid for the priority service and how fast did you get approval?

Your partner doesn't need to have a current job offer in the UK, but as the UK Ancestry visa is a working visa, he/she will need to provide evidence of being both able and willing to work. Volunteer work is allowed. When he/she has been in the UK for 5 years on an ancestry visa, they'll need to document their work history in their application for indefinite leave to remain.

The following document, which provides guidance for Home Office staff in assessing ancestry visa applications, should help. Of particular interest to your questions about employment is page 29 onwards, although reading the entire document will be useful.

Hello thank you so much for this information. Now Im wondering if my Partner should just apply for one of the other visas?
He's 62 and may or may not want to work when he gets there. We have enough money to keep ourselves and meet the requirements
Do you think it would be better to apply under Spouse Visa or a General Visa?
We are not married but have lived in a Civil Partnership for over 30 years and can prove that easily.
Is there any other of these forms that show what they ask for in the Spouse Visas or other ones?
thank you for your help.

If he doesn't want to work, then an Ancestry visa doesn't sound suitable.

A General Visa is also a work based visa isn't it? So that wouldn't be suitable and leaves the spouse visa - are you a UK citizen? If so, and you have the savings required (£62,500 IIRC), then that seems the simplest and quickest route, and he wouldn't have to work either.

This Wiki article gives details, and a link to the guidance I think - https://britishexpats.com/wiki/Spouse_Immigration-UK

Good luck.

To obtain a spouse/unmarried partner visa, the British spouse/unmarried partner has to sponsor said partner:

https://www.gov.uk/uk-family-visa

There are financial requirements the sponsor has to fulfill. The following document provides full details of the categories under which one can qualify:

What is the 'General visa' ? There is a Standard Visitor visa or a Skilled Worker visa. (neither of which sounds as though would be suitable for your needs)

Yes Sorry it was the Standard Visitor Visa I meant. I believe we will go with the Family Visa as I am a British Citizen (born in UK)
thank you for the help. Its great to know people on here can keep us moving in a straight line, as Gov stuff can be extremely confusing (wording etc) and we dont want to make a mistake.

There's an awful lot of reading to do and you're right, it's not always as clear as it could be. Have a look at the links christmasoompa and SanDiegogirl posted to get a bit of a handle on the process, and then you'll be able to ask questions on anything that needs clarifying.

I agree that the spouse visa sounds the right option for you, although it gets quite pricey. You'll be using the Savings category by the sounds, but in addition to that there's application fees (your initial application, then another 2.5 years later, then a further one at 5 years in order to apply for indefinite leave to remain. And another whack after that to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen (if wanted). There's also an immigration health surcharge. I think the last time I added the application fees and health surcharge together it was around 10,000 pounds over the five years. Just giving you a bit of advance notice so you don't choke on your cuppa when you add it all up!

Do feel free to ask questions as you go along, there's usually someone who can help. Best of luck with the reading.

ps, it's not possible to live in the UK with a visitor visa.
