Default Leaving Cayman

In case anybody is looking for me in this Cayman section... No, I haven't been banned by the Hall Monitors! I have moved to Ecuador, to be with my son and his bride. So now I am posting in the Ecuador section of this "Rest of the World" section. We have leased the Cayman house that had been my home for 27 years, and I have given up my once-a-week consultancy job there. Of course retaining that house means I must continue to keep an eye on what happens in Cayman, but perhaps not quite as eagle an eye as formerly.

Cheers. GB

GB, good on you! Leaving a house after 27 years shows commitment and renting it out in Cayman currently is probably nice as well. Enjoy your time in Ecuador. Always good to read your posts in the last 10 years or so. All the best.

Thanks for the comment, Wharfer. I was 27 years in the same house, plus 19 years in a flat before that; so 46 years total in Cayman. My wife and son became Cayman "citizens", but I was on the local politicians' black-list, so never made it. (It's a long story. As Manager of the local Chamber of Commerce, in 1988 I was involved in frustrating an attempt to introduce a tax on salary-incomes. The British FCO vetoed my deportation, but wouldn't go any further!)

All the best Gordon in your latest adventure. 46 years in Cayman is a long time. More has happened in that time than in probably the previous 500 years. I still read CNS even though we left for a different island and plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose it appears! We still have lots of friends there and are actually going back in January for 10 days of winter sun (Sunset House, GOH and Casa 43 are on the list). Our paths never crossed but I bet we'd have a wee dram and a good laugh.

Good for you, Jamesy! My house (now rented) is on the street opposite Sunset House, so I know the area well. Where did you live, when you were there? And also, what years were you there? Was it during my highly controversial newspaper columns - 1990 to 2012? Fun times, those were!! (I'm not 100% sure of those exact years.) I hope everything is going well for you in... Jersey, was it, or Guernsey?

We were practically neighbours. We lived in Point Four Street from 2018 until 2023. Rented a flat from Terry Wilson (RIP Terry). Sunset House was our goto because we could walk there. Fabulous part of the island for everything. Wouldn't have wanted to live anywhere else on the island tbh.Events at home overtook us (and the cost of living made it no longer fun or attractive to live there) so we are in Guernsey now. Absolutely love it here. Great place to live. Jersey is frightfully common .

Jamesy. This may amuse you...I'm in trouble with my Neighbourhood Watch because my tenants had a rowdy party last week that went past midnight. Of course late-night parties are always a risk, but these tenants are six young Filipinos, all in good jobs, and it was a special occasion. As you know, Cayman hosts a hundred nationalities of all ages, but our quiet suburban street isn't used to that demographic. Sigh... With Xmas coming up, I am steeling myself to deal with more such grumbles!
