Default Options for winter work in TT or CARICOM

Hi all,
'New to the forum so hello everyone - I'm Dan from England. Well travelled. In my mid-40s, single.

This drab English summer as reignited a desire of mine to try to at least spend some of the year in warmer climes! Life is too short right! So rather than continuing my procrastination and excuses I've decided to explore my potential options.

I'm looking for any advice and insight folks may be able to offer regarding the idea of staying in Trinidad (or any other CARICOM country) over the winter (UK) months working temporarily or 'seasonally'. What could be possible work options? Also, are monthly rental options commonplace?

I can get my T&T citizenship because my dad was born there. However I've never yet visited. I am educated to British BSc degree level - Environmental Sciences (though I've never actually worked in that field professionally). I am also a category 1 level golfer.

I wouldn't be necessarily looking for professional work just some modest income to keep me going. (I earn enough in England to offset much of the cost).

I'd really appreciate any suggestions and advice, even if just in general.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well!?
Regards,
Dan.

If you get your citizenship you can work, but only in TnT.

Otherwise you are not allowed to, it will be a condition of your tourist visa, and no local person or firm will employ you, apart from the legal consequences for them and you, all their local employees would 'shop' you in a second.

Monthly rental is common, price varies hugely. You realise of course that trinidad isnt really a holiday destination, which can make it cheaper. The turist islands have higher prices, here a 1 bed rabbit hutch in the SW is circa 1000us/month. Living costs roughly average maybe twice your home country.

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome to the forum.

I was under the impression that professionals and/or those with particular in-demand skills & experience could live & work in CARICOM countries, no?

Dan.

No, as is the case in most caribbean islands, foreign workers are not encouraged. An employer looking for a specific skill - if they can prove no local is available, can apply for a work permit for the position. Happens in the finance and oil industries mostly, but as the employers have to pay thousands a year for a work visa, its not done for non specialist jobs. You cant apply, your prospective employer has to apply.

Exceptions - if you dont work in their local economy, you may be a tourist in barbados for a year for a fee of a few thousand, presumably working for a foreign company - abroad. If you have 250k, you can afford as a fee, you can buy a passport in several countries, if you have a few tens of millions you might be invited to become a citizen.

Its also true that mobility of labour for caricom citizens is limited to a few specific areas, though you may live most places.
