6 months in BC….
We have been in BC 6 months and the time has flown! I’ve tried to break down this post so you all don’t die of boredom. Good luck with keeping you eyes open!
Hints:
• Don’t underestimate how long it will take you to feel settled. We thought we would be up and running in two months. I’m only just starting to not feel like a tourist event though I have been working since our second month.
• Be prepared for homesickness. It doesn’t happen to everyone but it really hit me after a few months. When F&F visit it’s a doubled edged sword – amazing to see them BUT horrible when then go.
Good Stuff:
• We are renting a great place, with great views and facilities that has allowed us to feel settled and save heaps while we decide where to lay our roots.
• Work. We are NOW both enjoying our work. I managed to change up my job and got a promotion too, which meant I could go part time, so I am not a slave to the wage and I am not doing a monstrous commute every day. OH enjoys his work, it’s tiring but he has job satisfaction and good friends.
• Our families’ have been or are planning to come to visit. The ones that have been have loved it and are very support of us. This has been a huge help to us. We really appreciate them spending the cash and time to come see us, esp as we were the ones that left not then.
• BC is beautiful. Really, really beautiful. We have a great outdoors life. I’m not sure if this will wear off but as we are on TWP we take advantage of everything because the clock is ticking. I think we have done more of this province than many locals.
Stuff We Need to Work On:
• Friends. We have a few friends but we need to get a few more. We have not prioritized this so we are at fault. The other side is the question - will you ever make friends like you had at home? I’m not sure. Sharing a home with ppl while at uni/ going on girly holidays/ growing up together seals a friendship and as an adult I’m not sure it’s the same.
The Future:
Is uncertain. We are unsure of where will be the best place for us in the future…BC or the UK. If anyone has a crystal ball can I borrow it?
Who knows?! We agreed two years so we can try to get the best impression possible we both agreed that we would view is a s a ‘two year experience†rather that ‘we’re emigrating ‘ so there is less pressure. We also want to go back to the UK to weigh up both places and try not to do “the grass is greener attitude.’
We didn’t leave the UK because we hated it, we wanted the adventure, and in truth I don’t know if I could live this far away from my family forever. Who knows………..
In conclusion it is great getting to live here and experience life in a new country, it has definitely made our relationship stronger and waking up every day to see the mountains while your eating your cornflakes is pretty amazing!

Sounds like you are enjoying your new life, while keeping your feet firmly on the ground regards to the future.
We have been here (Ontario) 3 months tomorrow, and I agre it great that family visit, but it is so hard waving them off at the airport.
