Well, it's far from clear that it was an achievement. One daughter working in refugee camps in Africa, plainly a hero. One lawyering in BC, good for her. One profoundly autistic, keeping me poor but teaching us that there's more to life than assets. It might all have come out the same in the UK and we'd have had better beer and spent less on cheese.

I will say though that something the children got from Canada that they would not have had in the UK is bilingualism and the benefits thereof. The daughter in Africa now lives in Italian, I doubt that she'd have mastered that tongue so quickly had she not already spoken two languages.
