M&S - not that I've discovered yet, Sears is like Debenhams and The Bay is House of Fraser
Dixons - you've got a few to choose from, Future Shop, Best Buy to name two
PC World - not really but Future Shop 7 Best Buy are huge stores with massive PC sections
Lidl - nope, Aldi are in the US so hopefully they will cross the border one day. There are some cheaper supermarkets a bit like Aldi but they are mainly out east

Yep - I'd equate Zellers to Woolworth's.

Zellers is sort of a cross between woolies and walmart

Future Shop and Best Buy are actually owned by the same parent company..you wont often find them competing against each other.

Woolies wasn't bad ten years ago, was it? I can't remember because it's so long since I last went into one. Zellers is a poor store in my opinion although there's nothing here that's really worth writing home about. Still, no one moved here for the shopping, right?

Consumer law seems a bit dodgy here too. Retailers absolving themselves of any responsibility as soon as they can so that faulty items have to be mailed back to the manufacturer. And what about the appalling mail-in money off deals...

Its simple

Wal-Mart = Immigrants and Red Necks

Zellars = Immigrants and Red Necks in the denial phase

:D

I only ever go to Zellers if I am in an area where there is one and need something. Walmart is a lot better and cheaper than Zellers. Another thing Walmart's always busy, Zellers never is. And it has to be the slowest place on the planet to buy something, why does it take so long?

You do need to check between Future Shop and Best Buy though. I have seen things on sale at one and not the other. For example at Christmas the DS game Mario party was $5 cheaper at Best Buy.

I find with Zellers that you often have to check the receipt when the item is discounted as it will not be reflected in the price at the till :(

Sears has the catalogue shopping (like Argos, but you have to wait a week for your stuff to arrive!)

Oh how I miss M&S...

Re: -Zellers +

Zellers used to be a canadian alternative to walmart, but its now in US ownership, so the principal reason to shop there is no longer that I was supporting a canadian business, its become simply that its not walmart (given that walmart is the root of all the worlds evils)

However, if you ask me Zellers is dying on its arse, stock/ inventory levels are very low, quality is not great and getting worse as they cut corners...it looks, feels and smell a lot like the old K-mart, just before they went out of business.

Walmart on the other hand (while the root of all evil) seems to be trying to go a bit upmarket, and obviously has the money to revamp its stores and keep things fresh. I still hate shopping there, for ethical reasons, but I hate shopping at Zellers for more practical reasons...it just seems depressing! But when you are on a "family budget" you pretty much have to chose one or the other if you live in this area, and to be honest most people are drawn to walmart, which bodes very badly for Zellers long term future.

I used to live near a Zellers and would probably shop there a bit but now we are nearer a Walmart we go there a lot more. Zellers is depressing and I noticed around 2 years ago they put up there prices a bit. The Zellers that I rarely go is right next to a Loblaws and because they are really slow, I can normally get what I need in Loblaws or wait until I go to Walmart.

I find the Walmarts on two levels an absolute nightmare to go, normally busy, never know where anything is. The Walmart near me is on one level and massive.

btw is Walmart's extra special range anything to do with Asda?

Walmart and Asda are one and the same. And I hate both. My friend from the UK who visits me quite often works for Asda over there, so insists on shopping at Walmart here and dragging me with her. The only upside is she gets an employee's discount here as well, which she applies to anything I buy too. Crap quality on everything though.

Zellers, you have to carefully watch prices at the checkout, to make sure sale price is applied. The only good thing about Zellers is their return policy, even without a receipt, they will back up everything they sell. Especially on kids' clothes, which they guarantee won't wear out before they are outgrown.
