Default Your possessions

I have spent months and months and months decluttering the house now and am actually quite shocked at how little I've got left and how unattached I am to the vast majority of stuff.

Obviously that doesn't include things like photos and special jewellery, things with tangible memories attached (babies first blankets and all that) but everything else, well it has been so easy to get rid of.

From someone how has always lived with clutter this came as a real shock to me.

Are you possessive about your possessions?

Most people are. That's why there are even reality TV shows about clutter clearances. Most only realize what they've gathered over the years when they require to physically move house, like yourself.

Not at all. I hate buying things because, if I buy something one of two things will happen; it'll break down and be a bother taking it back or it'll get stolen. I don't need the aggro and I think it's generally true that you don't own things, things own you. My philosophy is that if I can't consume it within 24 hours of buying it I don't need it.

I am so attached to some of our(my) stuff it is unreal.
We are trying to work out what we want to take, and what to sell, and what to chuck.
and i find i attach a memory to things, anything, or that if someone bought it for me they will know i've chucked and be offended!! Ridiculous i know!!
Getting rid and selling stuff is going to HARD!!!! If i could take it all i would.

I was like that back in September when I first started. What I did (and carry on doing) is go through and do an initial sift.

Then leave it a while (a few weeks in between).

The I went through and did another sift.

And so on.

I think I've done it three or four times but in truth I'm getting better at walking in to a room and removing items I know won't be going as I leave the room. I just seem to walk around and if something catches my eye then I will try to sift it straight away.

It has taken many many months to get into this mindset though. I thinks as we edge ever closer to moving.
