xbox 360(european version) has a detachable hard drive ,which according to xbox customer service is compatible with a north american console,
a european console wont work with US cd's and US console wont work with european cds..dumb...for anyone who intends to buy a xbox console, think twice about it, i bought 3 in last 2 years, two have crashed ,the good side with xbox is that they have a excellent gaming network and some great games available only on xbox(forza, halo series)

There are a few things to look at here:
1) PAL vs NTSC. UK uses PAL, Canada and US use NTSC. This is the display format. I'm not sure what the deal is in regards to this. I *think* you should be ok though, as PAL has more lines than NTSC, thus it can display a full NTSC picture, whereas if it were an NTSC unit it might not be able to show the full picture. However, it would not surprise me if the unit could handle both without issue.
2) Region coding on games and DVDs. Typically you're looking at Region 2 (UK) and Region 1 (North America). As with normal DVD players, an R2 disk will only play in an R2 player. The xbox is no exception to this. Thus your UK games will play in your machine, but it will NOT play US games or dvd's.
If it were an original xbox I'd tell you to get it modchipped and install XBMC on it as that'll allow it to be region free when it comes to DVDs and possibly games - though I'm not 100 percent on the game side of things.
3) Power. Obviously different power requirements here, so you'd need a convertor of some sort.

Not strictly true.
We brought our UK XBOX 360 with us, we had it working intermittently, then brought a Canadian one, we transferred the HDD and Wireless Adaptor along with the extra controllers etc.... After 6 months, my son decided to "try the UK games sat in the basement", to our surprise, almost half of them worked!
Don't get rid of all your PAL games yet, might be worth a try. BTW, we are using Component output to Sanyo 46" LCD displaying at 1080p. Sweet!!!

okay.... so doubt creeps back in....
so i ought to be able to play Canadian bought games on a UK Xbox360?
i tend not to keep games once i finish them, so the PAL titles will be gone soon.
but of course thoughts such as these fail to consider the power supply needed by the console, irrespective of what it is being used for / with.

^^^it really does seem that the cost of a new one is marginally more than the sale of our current one (inclusive of games we have) plus a console bought out there isn't likely to risk breaching any house insurance due to the voltage malarky.
i could return to the Sony side though..... i had only bought an Xbox after a lifetime of loyal playstationing, due to the cost of PS3 over here.
