My wife has never driven and is preparing to do the written test to enable her to get a license to learn to drive.

Now she's worrying

Anyone done this or know if its a pick 1 from 4 options type of test or is it a written answer type test with things like 'what does this sign mean?', 'what is the stopping distance at x miles an hour?' and 'how long after you start maneuvering should you indicate?' type questions.

Can't find an on-line test form like Alberta has.

I took the written test and practical test when I moved to Ontario as it was before they changed the rule that now allows you to swap the licence.

It is not a difficult test, it is multiple choice and based on the Driver's Handbook: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/

You should definately get the book, or use the online version in the link. The test is simple but there are a few Ontario/Canada specific questions that you might not know if you don't read it, such as what kind of vehicle has a blue flashing light (snow plough not emergency vehicle) or rules surrounding school buses etc.

You can get a couple wrong and still pass and you can re-take it if you do fail. They tell you what you got wrong.

My seventeen year old daughter has just passed this test to get her first license at the second attempt. I'm very excited at the thought of sitting with her while she drives our car!

The first attempt failed after she practised a lot with an online test and only gave the official Ontario Drivers Handbook a cursory glance. The second attempt was more successful after she knuckled down and read the book properly.

My (at that time, totally over the top, renegade son) passed without even conceding that reading the Ontario Driver's Handbook, or whatever, might help.

Apparently streetsmarts aka commonsense rules.
