Re: Would this happen in the UK?
There was some nurseries that I went to that didnt celebrate Halloween for the reason why its exists (the history behind it for example), and some didn't sing certain nursery rhymes becuase of what they really meant. I actually worked in one recently that stopped reading the three billy goats gruff because of the nature of the book and the trolls.

Sorry if I'm boring you people but you've got me on a rant now lol. I worked in many nurseries as I worked on supply for a while and another nursery wasn't allowing the kids (oh sorry its pc to say children) use used toilet rolls for art activities.

Re: Would this happen in the UK?
As a kid I think ALL my craft projects involved toilet rolls.Whats wrong with toilet rolls?
My kid would be cruicified...when she has her hospital apointments in Scarbourogh she often points out (loudly :o ) the "brown people". Its not a racist thing (I think), out here in the boonies its a rather different racial mix for a 4 year old to take in without stating the obvious difference she sees...she herself is a "pink person" "Deferred Success"...that's my fave from tablelands article. "Intrinsic Aptitude" was another classic. Didnt Frank Ellis, a lecturer at my old Uni, Leeds, get fired or suspended for publishing some (statistically valid) data showing "persistent deviation" in the average IQ of black and white people. Now his methodology might have been a bit suspect, but what happened to freedom of speech, and whats the point in doing research if you have already decided what the acceptable results are going to be and suspend people when they dont conform to that. |

No one seemed to give a toss but then again I knew I was leaving to come over here. I strongly believe that true self-esteem can only be developed through students knowing when they're wrong, having possibly failed and then having worked through to a successful conclusion. Otherwise we end up with youths full of confidence and no real ability - ring any bells??? |

Hmm, that quietly went away..worked out well for him by the look of it...retired a year early and the uni paid him a years salary and some of his legal costs...
"Russian and Slavonic studies lecturer Frank Ellis has taken early retirement from the University of Leeds. He left on June 30. Dr Ellis was suspended on March 23 following remarks made in interviews which the University considered unacceptably racist. Dr Ellis, 53, retired on the same standard terms available to his colleagues. However, in bringing forward the retirement a year sooner than Dr Ellis wanted, the University agreed to pay him a year’s salary and to make a contribution towards his legal costs. Re: Would this happen in the UK?
But the fact remains that the party that the most people expressed a preference for is the one in power. Labour: 36% of the vote, 55% of the seats. Conservatives: 33% of the vote, 30% of the seats. Liberal Democrats: 22% of the vote, 10% of the seats. That, plus the fact that England has Labour foisted upon it by the Scots, who have their own parliament, forms much of the lingering grievance among those with whom Tone is not flavour of the month. Any party other than Labour would have to secure a whopping majority of the public vote to even be in with a shout at taking parliament. Odd that no-one ever makes a fuss about it though, it's just accepted. But that's a whole other topic. At least I'll be in Canada before Greedy Gordon can wreak much more malevolent harm on my bank balance (unless he imposes a 40% exit tax for fleeing Britons.... shhh, don't give him ideas). On the whole mince pie health and safety thing, it's depressing that every time you think you've seen it all and, surely, nothing more ridiculous could possibly be reported, you're invariably proved wrong within a matter of days. And waaaay back to the original post of this thread, yes, it might happen in the UK but no, such decoration wouldn't last long before being stolen or vandalised. :) Cheers, Iain |
