I've just een given the go ahead to work in Vancouver (city). Even though i've done a bit of reseach on the area, i would like to hear from peope who work and live there. What area is best to rent in? Is it worth getting a car? or just use public transport? Any feedback about Vancouver would be great.

there have been lots of threads on this recently, I recommend doing a search.
As for where is best to live, it depends. Where are you working? Do you have a family? What kind of commute would you prefer?

i dont have family, i't will be just me. i dont mind any commute really, motorbike, car , skytrain. I will be working out of Cambie.I dont want to end up renting somewhere and finding its a run down area, or junkies/hookers everywhere.

Your budget, whether you want your own place, or house share will kind of define your options.
Kitsilano
West end
Fairview
East van from 1st ave and further south, up to commercial
You won't need a car in those areas for sure. If you need to drive once in a while, join car2go

Hi El Richo will be renting first, for at least 6 months anyway. I've been told my wage will be about CA$1100 a week, so i dont know if i'll be able to afford somewhere nice, or commute from the Greater Vancouver area will have to. I'd prefer to live on my own, but if i got to share, so be it.
Im trying to find areas on the net but not getting much info.

Cambie is a very long street. You won't go far wrong except at the very far north of Cambie where it meets Hastings in downtown. At this point you are fine west of Cambie but it is dodgy to the east. South of False Creek the SkyTrain runs the length of Cambie so this is handy to commute.
$1,100 a week will net you about $3,600 a month after tax. Budget around $1,200 for a one bedroom apartment and this leaves you $2,400 for food, clothes and fun. If you don't run a car that should be OK.
One thing to remember is that apartments come unfurnished so you need to factor in some money to get set up.
This might be OK:

Which is exactly where I live and I love it. It all depends what you are looking for and what you're used to...

If you go to walkscore.com, they have a feature where you can input your work address, desired maximum commute length and mode of transport (Walk, cycle, drive, transit) and it will show you areas that fulfil that requirement. Pretty handy.

I assume your user name is from Murakami's novel. Is there a story behind this?
