Default Work situation Nova Scotia

Hello All,

Advise needed please, we have PR but still in the UK. Hoping to move to Nova Scotia but scared about moving as job situation/economy doesn't seem to be in our favour.

How did you do it? - should we wait until economy picks up?, what are the chances of work if we gamble and make the move?

My background is in Banking/finance and my OH is a Project Manager in utilities/construction.

Any comments/advice much appreciated

I think this will depend on you as an individual with regards to taking the risk or not.

In terms of economy NS has not been hit a hard as other area's of Canada, I personally have not seen any negative impacts in the year that we have been here.

We moved with PR but no jobs, however we had done a lot of research re our jobs and made contacts on our recce trip that we were able to pick up after we landed to look for work.

Have you been to NS to network for jobs etc up till now? What research have you done to date re your lines of work and opportunities available?

There is nothing to stop you applying from jobs from the UK, particularly if you have PR.

80% of the job market is hidden in NS, it can be a lot about who you know and being in the right place at the right time etc

This wiki link is very relevent to NS IMHO, networking is key

I came here as a skilled worker so I had a job but i didn't stay in that field long and it was easy to find "general work" to bring the money in, once I had contacts it was easy to get a great job, like the one I'm in now.

I find in NS it's really all about who you know, they seem to be jobs given to people that someone is a friend of a friend, just make sure that you don't piss anyone off in NS as word gets around (kidding) what I mean is everyone I meet here seems have some friend I know.

It's very 6 degrees of separation.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Nikki dreaming - Thanks for the links.

We are planning on coming across for a reccie in September. We are currently working to set up meetings but find networking awkward! - it doesn't seem normal

Or4ngecrush - Thanks for the info, my OH has a quick temper but knows what is is like to live in small community where everyone knows each other as he was brought up in Shetland.

If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations of the best use of time whilst on a reccie it would be much appreciated.

There are a number of networking events that are held at various times of each month and probably one of the better ones is held at the Halifax Club.

There are also web sites that post jobs available
