Default Work in Mississauga but where to live?

Hi

Planning on getting work in Mississauga but cant afford to live in the area. Want to live more rural anyway but must be within commuting distance of Mississauga ie less than an hour ideally.

Any ideas on where?

Thanks

You have to go west, either along the 401 to Guelph or along the QEW to Hamilton and beyond. North isn't cheap, south is water, east is metropolis. I'd look at the areas around Hamilton, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, somewhere like that.

I also work in Mississauga and we currently rent in Milton, but when our lease is up we want to move somewhere close but more rural. After looking around we have decided Georgetown,Caledon,Erin,Rockwood and Woodville are more what we have in mind. Here you can get beautiful properties with a lot of land, yet close enough to all the amenities you would want.

Er, yes, at a price. If the poster cannot afford to live in Mississauga then Caledon, home to the Palgrave Equestrian Centre and the Greenest Town in Ontario, is a bizarre suggestion.

Your wish list is, unfortunately, mutually exclusive. You are highly unlikely to find an affordable "rural" home that is within an hour of Mississauga. dbd is quite right in pointing you westward, as far as properties are concerned, but you'd have to be prepared to spend a lot of time travelling. People do it though. I know of folk that commute daily to TO from Barrie and Peterborough. They get up very early.

Oh, lots of people commute from Barrie, that's a domitory town.

The OH works on a farm in Schomberg, that's an hour out (against the traffic) and we half-heartedly keep up with the cost of a property out that way. Enough space for a couple of horses, say 5 acres, is $600,000 and up depending on the state of the barn (and to a lesser degree the state of the house). I don't think north is a sensible option because it's not cheap until you're way out and once you're past hwy 89 you start getting serious winter weather which may make commuting very difficult.

Also consider that the 401 is hell. At all costs avoid a commute involving the 401 between the 427 and the DVP. Living north means taking the 400 to some minor street then zigging west, then zagging south to rejoin the 401 somewhere a bit west, a huge pain in arse.
