Hi I have applied for skilled visa, i was wondering how far they will go back with work references as a couple of jobs i have left on unsavoury circumstances and am worried about what they may say.
Does anyone know the process that is used when the visa is being procesed e.g. how far back and how many ref's back will they go?
Thanks

You only need to provide detailed references for the last ten years unless they ask for more.
They don't care whether your old employers think you were a great worker or a time waster, just that you can prove what you did and how long you did it for.
If the employer won't give you a reference, at least try to get something in writing saying that they won't do so.
In my experience, most UK employers won't give anything beyond a 'Joe Bloggs worked here for six years as a Truffle Inspector, earned 50,000 a year and had three sick days' kind of reference anyway as they're worried about being sued if they give a bad reference or a good reference for someone who doesn't do well in their next job.
