Winter: time to get beardy ?

1 Attachment(s)
So after a week or two of minus temps and forecasted long term cold weather for the next 2 months or more, is it time to grow a beard ? I've noticed a few people grow the stubbly fluff beard or the medium-thickness 'forestry workers beard' stylee. Note I'm not thinking of a full thick bushy bushman look. Now that would just be stoopid.

And so I'm given to consideration of achieving beardy status....less morning hassles with shaving. Lower maintenance costs, no need to buy expensive multi-blade razors for a few weeks. A nice no-cost insulated face-protector. A somewhat rugged look appealing to certain types.

So, is it time to beardy up, or should I yearn for something more socially acceptable, like a Satan-worshipper, NDP member, etc ? Anyone on here a part time winter beardy type ?

Rich.

Ask your Mrs what she thinks. I find Beardies an absolute turn-off myself. Rugged look would be a beardless Richard Armitage in North & South. ;)

On a more serious note, growing a beard certainly does help when it is -20 outside. If you look to an earlier post of 'what happens to the face' where people are putting forward all sorts of elaborate scarf, polo neck hat combinations to cover the face from the wind chill, a beard is a natural defence.
However, there are additional complications, like it will freeze like the hairs in your nose. So you will end up with a ice crystals etc freezing your beard together.
I find more people with beards in Canada than in the UK, especially in winter. Also you can partake in the Canadian tradition of the 'play-off beard' where you stop shaving once your team starts in the play-offs and you keep growing the beard until it's over. You will notice lots of guys start seemingly randomly growing beards at the same time.

Grow one of those chin strap beards mate, or even a rather splendid goatee! Not only will it help with the cold, but it'll also give you the illusion of chin ;)

I raised the possibility of a beard to my missus. Fine, if I'm prepared to give up sex for the Winter.

Does this still count if you have a ginger one?

What's wrong with a balaclava? Or some sort of hat?

Does a mole with a hair growing out of it count for anything? ;)

Yes, I suffer from a seasonal beard disorder. I find it really makes a difference in terms of facial numbness when its really cold, so its hand for "parade season" and messing about making a skating rink.

I can get away without shaving for a few days a time this way, and after the first few days its soft enough that MrsK has no complaints ;) Its a goatee thing...sadly a bit ging too:( She must really love me!

Besides, when it comes off again in the spring I look so much younger

I realised how...well... canadian I had become yesterday, moving a big pile of dirt to make a flatish section of yard to make the rink on.

A: Calling it "The Yard"
B: Wanting a rink
C: Wanting it better than last year!
D: Thinking, Phew, bit warm, I should take my jacket off, then realising it was minus 5!

At the minute th OH is in Canada while I'm still in the UK finishing my PhD, so I'm cultivating a thesis writing beard.

But I've been told by my good lady wife that if it's not gone by the time I get to Canada I'll have a long walk home from the airport.

Tell her she shouldnt knock it until shes tried it!

There seems to be a lot of irrational beard prejudice in the UK...I used to have it too, but when you are out freezing various bits off outside at -20 practicalities take over, and you realise its nothing to be afraid off.

I suspect if my OH wasnt Canadian I theres a good chance I would never have been given the opportunity to keep it either.

I don't think it's up for negotiation! When I tried arguing she just threatened to bring extra cases of stuff to the airport for me to carry on the journey.

She's a wiley one ;)

I sport a goatee 365 days of the year. The Mrs threatens to leave if I shave it off. Apart from a disturbing amount of grey, nay white appearing in it I am happy to comply! It doesn't get cold enough here to notice any appreciable difference having one in winter or not. On the other hand it doesn't get warm enough in summer to make it too sweaty an experience either!

There's surely no arguing that facial hair on men is one thing Mrs Thatcher was right about :D

She said she "wouldn't tolerate any minister of mine wearing a beard" I think, they were banned from the cabinet.

I don't mind a goatee I suppose, it's the full beard I couldn't stand.

What was that Roald Dahl book about a beardy man with all kinds of food debris stuck in there...? I must have read that at a young and impressionable age and it's stuck with me :D

:scared: You're scaring me!

Found this nice site - http://www.nationalbeardregistry.org/ - beardies are encouraged to register there. Is that so they can be rounded up more easily?

Edit: Quality, they put "Jesus" next to "Uncle Jesse" from The Dukes of Hazzard.

Beard and moustache together (or just a tushty bit), if kept nice and trim, look okay. However, I think that you can be arrested in the UK for sporting a moustache on its own ......... yeah by the fashion police ;)

Yeh, I'm being too harsh. It's just the Captain Birds Eye full on thing I don't like.

My brother once grew one and got a shock as it was ginger, and he's got dark brown hair. We had a right laugh at him for months, so beards aren't all bad :D

Someone at work joked that I should die it white and come as Santa to the Xmas party. She was joking but the glint in some people's eyes makes me think I might have to shave or be held down and attacked with domestos!! :D
