We were there in July last year & thought it was a very nice town, can't help as far as jobs, schools etc but it appeared that logging was big business and we also saw the usual smattering of stores found in a thriving community - timmies, mcdonalds, etc

thanks louise
been looking at all angles, but it seems to be in the middle of nowhere on the BC map, how did you find the roads and travel?

We stayed in 100 mile house 2 years ago and whilst it was a nice area and had the perfect "get away from it all" resort there wasn't much else in the vicinity.
Depends what you want from your new life i suppose.

the roads are all great around that area. We ended up camping just outside of williams lake in a place called lac la hache which was beautiful. As far as i can recall, there isn't actually a lake at williams lake! We stopped in the tourist info at a place called 100 mile house and they suggested lac la hache rather than williams lake but only because we wanted somewhere secluded. Williams lake is a fairly large town which seemed clean and thriving. There was a couple of rv dealers just outside of town and a large ski doo/ motorcycle dealership as well as a couple of hotel/motel chain accommodations. Over all, the place had a good feeling

we stayed at the crystal springs campground - it was lovely except I wouldn't get in the lake to swim with OH as there were loads of fish!!!

Sitting out in the evening looking out over the lake was just great and the sound of the loons was fascinating.

Too far away from any decent resources. High unemployment, bad drug issues and ongoing native issues. Would not live there if you paid me.

That's quite a drive for someone after a nine hour flight from England if anyone comes to visit or yourself when you come home from a visit to the UK.

You can use the Canadian government's Job Bank website to get an idea of the jobs that are available in a given area. If you want to search for Williams Lake, the easiest thing to do is to search for the Cariboo / Chilcotin region of British Columbia.

I will tell you what I know of the area, I grew up in Prince George and have been there many times over my 30 years up north.
Williams lake (approx 12000 people) is a very small town in central BC it is 1 1/2 hrs drive from Quesnel (approx 20,000 people) next largest town and 3 hrs drive from Prince George(approx 80,000 people) the closest large city and the hub of Norther BC. Williams lake is a small community surrounded by native reserves its local economy is primarily the forestry industry, it does have a lake located on the south entrance of the town. it is the type of place that rolls up the sidewalks after 8pm it is a great area for fishing and hunting has a rodeo every year which draws people from the north. it is called Willies puddle by most people in the North. the area is definitely beautiful as is most of central and northern BC. Kamloops is the largest city to the South and is a good 6 hr drive away. Most people in the lower mainland don't have a clue at is located north of Hope I personally would not live in Williams lake ( too small for me) but the north is a beautiful place.
