Default Will US TV work?

I have the chance to buy a U.S TV and entertainment system at a very good price from a friend in the U.K
I am not too clued up with the TV systems over in Canada as I was going to worry about that when we get there. As I can now buy a new system at a good price, I was wondering if the TV and entertainment system would work okay?
If I buy the item new here and then ship it over, are there any implications regarding taxes etc?
Sorry for another question about TV's, but I could only find stuff linked to UK Tv's.
Answers on a postcard please!!

Jay

LCD; You can replace the backlight when it burns out, its relatively cheap and easily to do.

When plasma burns out, its toast.

If you are the sort to upgrade everyother year it probably doesnt matter, so plasma wins at the moment as its cheaper, but for the rest of us I think LCD is the way to go, even if it cost a bit more to buy into.

LCD usually gives better resolution but Plasma gives you better contrast and in general a better picture. It is true that Plasma "burns out" but not really a factor with latest Plasma sets, only early ones. A Plasma will last for years and years.

The thing of concern for you is portability. Plasmas are notoriously hard to transport without damage, they cannot be laid flat. So besides anything else, if you are thinking of getting something to ship across DEFINITELY go LCD.

Has anyone stuck a plasma in a container and seen what happens to it at the other end? I'm guessing you'd have a novelty collection of broken pieces of glass

Thanks for the replies so far.

Can I assume based on the answers given, that the plugs are the same for US and Canada (Never been to US as an adult!) or would I need some converters?

Thanks again,
Jay

My OH brought her TV/VCR combo when she moved from the US. It works the same here as it did there. Yes, the plugs are the same.

You're in luck, because the English plugs in Canada and the US are the same, and the French plugs in Canada happen to match the Spanish plugs in the US. So no worries!

But don't use the French plugs in Canada unless you speak quebecois. (Or spanish).

I'm watching a US-bought TV now. There was something in the blurb about sex/violence etc. onscreen ratings being different here than in the US but the telly seems to know where it is, and displays the appropriate rating regardless. Not that I pay it any attention anyway, but it might be important to you

We have TV's, DVD players/recorders, VCR which were bought in the US and they work just fine in Canada. The plugs, voltage etc is the same for the US and Canada.

Sorry to open this up again.

Can anyone in the Calgary area let me know good places to get LCD / entertainment system from. Its the one thing I never checked when out there as I figured I would have to buy one and didn't expect the offer of a cheap one here.
I am trying to find costs of say a 46" HD LCD TV and surround sound entertainment system to give me an idea of costs.
I have looked at bestbuy.ca but wanted to know Calgary prices if possible.

If anyone has any knowledge of prices, or stores that I can check on the internet that they have used, replies would be appreciated.

Things are moving along quickly now. Med requests received today, just over two weeks of posting PNP application to London so trying to get my skates on with organising things.

Thanks again,
Jay

I have a funny feeling the only incompatibility issues might arise in TIVO, or PVR. Just a whim...

The FCC and the CRTC (the US and Canadian airwave watchdogs) don't always talk the same talk, hence mobiles, satellite TV, etc acting funny.
